Prayer Thank you, God For giving us today. Help us to be grateful in every way As we learn to be trustworthy, respectful, responsible, fair and caring citizens. Please watch over us, As we explore and learn. Please bless everyone of us, our friends and family. Server Role Active Directory Domain Services Server Role A server role refers to the primary function or set of services that a server provides within a network. Different server roles are designed to handle specific tasks and applications, which helps to optimize performance, security, and manageability. Server Role Performance Standards Add and install AD DS, DNS, DHCP, File Server, installing Print and Document Services and Remote Desktop Services for server role. Create organizational unit and group policy management to allow file sharing and create new user on an organizational unit. Install server backup feature for computer system maintenance and repair. Server Role Definition Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) is a directory service developed by Microsoft for Windows domain networks. Active Directory is a database that stores user account and passwords, computers, printers, file shares, and security groups. Purpose of Active Directory Security Authentication - Only allow authorized users to logon to network computer. Centralized security management of network resources - User account are stored in one place (AD) instead of each individual computer. Common task with AD Create / Delete user accounts Reset passwords Without Active Directory Creating an account will be complicated. Because you need to create an account one by one on each computer. Also, resetting password will be one by one. With Active Directory Provide Centralized management of account. Also, it allows reset of password for all computers that is connected to the server. Server Role Domain Name System (DNS) Server Domain Name System Domain Name System (DNS) is one of the industry- standard suites of protocols that comprise TCP/IP (TCP/IP stands for Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol, which is a set of networking protocols that allows two or more computers to communicate). DNS Server DNS Server is automatically installed with Active Directory as the Global Catalogue server for the forest and domain. Domain and Forest Domain - is a collection of objects like users, groups, and devices that share the same Active Directory database. (e.g. tup.edu.ph) Forest - is a collection of one or more domains that share a common schema and global catalog. Example: Company forest “techserver.com” Domain 1: hr.techserver.com Domain 2: it.techserver.com Domain 3: sales.techserver.com AD DS and DNS Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) uses DNS as its domain controller location mechanism. When any of the principal Active Directory operations is performed, such as authentication, updating, or searching, computers use DNS to locate Active Directory domain controllers. In addition, domain controllers use DNS to locate each other. Domain Controller Promoter DCPromo (Domain Controller Promoter) is a tool in Active Directory that installs and removes Active Directory Domain Services and promotes domain controllers. Domain Controller Promoter DCPromo, builds forests and domains in Active Directory. Server Role Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) Server Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is a core infrastructure service on any network that provides IP addressing and DNS server information to PC clients and any other device. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol DHCP is used so that you do not have to statically assign IP addresses to every device on your network and manage the issues that static IP addressing can create. Server Role File Server File server File server is a computer attached network that provides a location for shared disk access, i.e. storage of computer files (such as text, image, sound, video). File server Files from a computer that is connected to a network can be accessed by the workstations that are able to reach the computer that shares the access through a computer network. Server Role Printer and Document Services Print and Document Services Print and Document Services is a server role in Windows Server 2008 R2 that enables you to share printers and scanners on a network, set up print servers and scan servers, and centralize network printer and scanner management tasks. Server Role Remote Desktop Services Remote Desktop Services Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or (Terminal Services) are a key part of Windows Server 2008 that allows users to communicate and access other machines virtually. Remote Desktop Services Some of the virtual technology services provided include the ability to access outside desktops, session- based desktops, or data center applications from within a corporate-based network as well as from the Internet. Additional Setup Windows Domain Windows Domain A Windows domain is a form of a computer network in which all user accounts, computers, printers and other security principals, are registered with a central database located on one or more clusters of central computers known as domain controllers. Additional Setup Organizational Unit (OU) Organizational Unit (OU) An organizational unit (OU) is a container within a Microsoft Active Directory domain which can hold users, groups and computers. It is the smallest unit to which an administrator can assign Group Policy settings or account permissions. Organizational Unit (OU) An organizational unit can have multiple OUs within it, but all attributes within the containing OU must be unique. Active Directory organizational units cannot contain objects from other domains. Additional Setup File Sharing File Sharing File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digital media, such as computer programs, multimedia (audio, images and video), documents or electronic books. File Sharing File sharing may be achieved in several ways. Common methods of storage, transmission and dispersion include manual sharing utilizing removable media, centralized servers on computer networks, World Wide Web-based hyperlinked documents, and the use of distributed peer-to-peer networking. Additional Setup Group Policy Group Policy Group Policy is a feature of the Microsoft Windows NT family of operating systems that controls the working environment of user accounts and computer accounts. Group Policy provides centralized management and configuration of operating systems, applications, and users' settings in an Active Directory environment. Group Policy Editor The Group Policy Editor is a Windows administration tool that allows users to configure many important settings on their computers or networks. Administrators can configure password requirements, startup programs, and define what applications or settings other users can change on their own. Create User Account in Windows Server 2008 R2 Additional Setup Adding Printer Additional Setup Remote Desktop Connection Additional Setup Backup Backup Backup refers to the copying of physical or virtual files or databases to a secondary location for preservation in case of equipment failure or catastrophe. The process of backing up data is pivotal to a successful disaster recovery plan.
