This can help you to work on improving your weak areas and ensuring you shine brightest in your strengths. Sometimes persons point our weaknesses or flaws as a way to hurt us. If we are already aware of them and working to improve, these people would have little power over us. Appreciating Self and others **Terms and Concept** **Tolerance --** Willingness to endure or accept the feelings, habits or belief that are different from yours. **Appreciation for self and others --** think good thoughts about yourself and others Take part in activities. E.g. spending time with friends and family, saying "thank you" "I love You" and being helpful. **Respect for differences in others --** We must be kind to others who are different from us, even if you don\'t always agree with them. Respect others whether they are of different races, color or religion. Ephesians 4:16 "From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work." We are all unique. There has never and will never be anyone like you. The following are ways in which we are diverse and we should appreciate each difference. 1. Generational - This applies to the time period in which you were born. Baby Boomer Generation: people aged 56 to 75 (born between 1946 and 1965) Generation X: people aged 41 to 55 (born between 1966 and 1980) Generation Y (millennials' ): people aged 25 to 40 (born between 1981 and 1996) Generation Z: people aged 9 to 24 (born between 1997 and 2012) Generation Alpha: people aged 8 or younger (born between 2013 and 2021) Each group is important. There are things that the older generations can teach young persons. Similarly, the younger generation can teach the older gen new things. 2. Race - this applies to a person's grouping based on physical traits because of ancestral heritage. In Trinidad and Tobago, because of our rich history, we are a melting pot of races. These mainly include: African descent, East Indian descent, Mixed race descent and our migrant population of Asians, Europeans, Middle Easterners and South America 3. Religious diversity - the presence of multiple spiritual beliefs. This is also impacted by our history. Some of the most well-known religions in Trinidad and Tobago include: Protestant (Pentecostal, Anglican, Presbyterian, Seventh-day Adventist, and Baptist), Roman Catholics, Hindus and Muslims. 4. Physical Ability - this not only applies to person's being differently able because of conditions ranging from: blindness, to being wheelchair bound and even mental disabilities. It also refers to having a greater ability to do one task, which someone else may have another. For example Brian Lara is a legend in the world of cricket. If we put him on the field with Keshorn Walcott, he may not be able to throw a javelin more than 30 feet. 5. Educational - is a type of diversity that is sometimes overlooked. Not everyone has benefited from the same opportunities over the years. Some students are more capable of handling subjects that require intense reading, while other may be better at practical subjects like welding. 6. Culture - this type of diversity is related to each person's 'way of being". It applies to a set of norms we get from the society we were raised in, shared language and our family values or beliefs. **Showing respect and appreciation** In order for our country to function we need to have an appreciation for the many different people that make up our nation. Many times it is easy for us to be friends with people who have the same beliefs that we do or those who have traits that we like. For example: we many prefer people who are artistic like we are or those who are into fashion. We must be able to **tolerate** the different beliefs of others even if we may not agree with them. Have **respect** for each other is about giving them the honour that they deserve. Making fun of other because they are different from you or have different opinions is an immature, distasteful and poor character trait on your part. **Homework** 1. **Write 3 Strengths and 2 Weaknesses about yourself.** 2. Using a dictionary or the Internet to guide you, write your own definition of the following words: a. Appreciation b. Respect c. Tolerance
