# Lab Notebook ## _*Lab Notebook*_ - Biochemical genetics: study the relationship between genes and enzymes. - Documentation details vary from lab to lab, but it's always done in the form of a lab notebook. - Lab note book: a primary record of research. Researchers use it to document their hypotheses, experiments, and initial analysis or interpretation of these experiments. - Lab notebook are legal documents. ## Benefits of Lab Notebook 1. Recording individual efforts. 2. Establishment of ownership for patent purposes. 3. Evaluation of a finished product. 4. Tracing the manufacture of a product. 5. Representing a contract. 6. Proving that a procedure was done correctly. 7. Developing standard operating procedures (SOP). ## General Rules for Writing Good Lab Notebook 1. Ink instead of pencil. 2. No omitting of any data. 3. Very clear words (frozen & fresh). 4. Do not cover any information. 5. Never fold a page, except in tape materials. 6. Write all real details. ## Structure of Lab Notebook - Title Page. - Lab Report. - Table of Contents. - Analysis questions. ## *Lab Reports* - Lab reports are written to describe and analyze a laboratory experiment that explores a scientific concept. - Neatly written in your science lab notebook. - Full Sentences are used with the exception of the Materials section that is written in the passive voice. - It is presented one week after the completion of the experiment.
