Matter Matter Is anything that has volume and mass. Volume STATES OF MATTER The amount of space something takes up is Its volume. Solid things-tables, chairs, desks, windows, walls, and floors-take up space and so have volume. Liquids, such as water in an aquarium or juice in a carton, also have volume. V\lhat about the air around you? You can't see it, but you know it's there. Air is made up o f gases, which also have volume. Matter can be solid, liquid, or gas. These three forms are called the states of matter. TEMPERATURE AND VOLUME The volume of matter changes with temperature. If a solid, liquid, or gas is heated, its volume will usually increase. If a solid, liquid, or gas is cooled, its volume will usually decrease. Gases change volume more easily than solids. They fill whatever container they are in. Like liquids and solids, gases usually expand when heated under constant pressure. The cooler the gas, usually the smaller its volume.
