What do these pictures represents? How do these system helps a city function? SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Objectives Explain the functions of Circulatory system Describe the roles of red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma in the circulatory system, highlighting their contributions to oxygen transport, immune defense, and the maintenance of overall body health. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL “It’s Guessing Time!” CIRCULATORY SYSTEM SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Circulatory System The circulatory system is a network consisting of blood, blood vessels, and the heart. It supplies the tissues in our body with oxygen and other nutrients, transports hormones, and removes unnecessary waste products. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Function of Respiratory System The circulatory system, also known as the cardiovascular system, is crucial for maintaining the body's homeostasis. Its primary functions include: 1.Transportation: It transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other essential substances to cells throughout the body. It also carries waste products like carbon dioxide and urea away from cells to be excreted. 2.Regulation: The circulatory system helps regulate body temperature, pH levels, and fluid balance. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL 3.Protection: It plays a role in the immune response by transporting white blood cells and antibodies to sites of infection. Additionally, it helps in clotting to prevent blood loss when injuries occur. 4. Exchange: It facilitates the exchange of gases (oxygen and carbon dioxide) between the blood and the air in the lungs, as well as the exchange of nutrients and waste products between blood and tissues. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Division of Circulatory System SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Circulatory System the dissolved food and oxygen needed for respiration are carried around the body by the circulatory system SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Division of Circulatory System 1. Cardiovacular System 2. Lymphatic System SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Cardiovascular System vascular- blood or blood vessels “cardio” means heart SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL What can you see pictures? SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Blood Body fluid in humans and other animals that delivers necessary substances such as nutrients and oxygen to the cells transports waste products away from those some cells. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Composition of Blood Our blood is composed of red corpusles , white corpuscles , platelets and plasma SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL PLASMA It is yellowish in color and contains many proteins needed by the body. Without this protein, the body will not live SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Plasma Protein Gamma globulin Albumin Prothrombin Fibrinogen SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Red Blood Cells or Red Corpuscles it is responsible for carrying oxygen to the different parts of the body. The red color of this cell is produced by hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a kind of protein rich in iron that carries oxygen throughout the body. It also transports carbon dioxide from the different parts of the body. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Red Blood Cells (RBC) Erythrocytes or red corpuscles. transport respiratory gases (O2 and CO2) they contain hemoglobin, an iron containing proteins that is bright as red when combined with oxygen it carry oxygen from the lungs and transport it to different tissues in the body The estimated normal lifespan of RBC is 100 – 120 days before being replaced with new ones SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL White Carpuscles or White Blood Cell help the body in fighting infection These are larger than the red blood cells but a fewer number. They are formed in the bone marrow and lymph vessels. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL White Blood Cells (WBC) Leucocytes or white Corpuscles act as the defense of the body against harmful bacteria and other foreign microorganisms Phagocytes a certain types of WBC that protect the body by ingesting bacteria and other foreign bodies. the estimated normal life span of WBC is 13 – 20 days SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Kinds of White Blood Cell 1.Neutrophils are the most numerous of the white blood cells. They destroy disease- causing bacteria. 2.Eosinophils are involved in infections caused buy parasitic worms. They release toxins to destroy these parasites. They are also involved in allergic reactions. 3.Basophils helps in the inflammation when a tissue is damaged. They contain histamine and heparin, which are involved in allergies and blood clothing. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Kinds of White Blood Cell 4. Monocytes or macrophages are the largest white blood cells that are involved in cleaning and digesting dead cells and debris. 5. Lymphocytes respond to specific infections in the body. They produce antibodies to fight disease- causing microorganism. Plus is composed of dead white blood cells that were killed by the poison of disease- causing microorganism. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Plasma are the smallest cells in the body. usually seen in the blood slides because they break down right after the blood is shed. They become the substance that helps in the clothing of blood. Like the RBC and WBC they are formed in bone marrow. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Platelets Thrombocytes aid in blood clotting to prevent bleeding from happening to prevent RBC from leaking out of uninjured blood vessels derived from megakaryocytes involved in hemoestasis – the process of the formation of blood clots SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL Karl Landsteiner, an Austrian scientist at the University of Vienna discover four different blood groups that characterize human population. SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL SCIENCE 9 JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ASSESSMENT In a 1/6 sheet of paper, write the correct answer for the following questions.
