# The Creature's First Victims I found a letter from my father. It said: Dear Victor, I don't know how to tell you this. William is dead! He was murdered! We had been walking near the lake. William was lost. He had been playing hide-and-seek with Ernest. Ernest couldn't find him. I found my lovely boy at 5:00 a.m. The prints of the murderer's fingers were on his neck. He had been wearing a pin. It had a picture of your mother on it. The pin was gone! William was murdered for a pin. Please come home. You are the only one who can comfort Elizabeth. Your loving father, Alfonse Frankenstein I said good-bye to Henry. I left for Geneva. I was very sad. And I was afraid. It was dark when I arrived. I visited the spot where William had been murdered. A storm came in. I walked along. I shouted, "William, dear angel!" The lightning flashed. I saw a figure in the woods. It was a giant. It was the monster I had created. What was he doing here? Did he murder my brother? I knew it was true. The monster passed me. I lost him in the gloom. I tried to follow. But he was too fast. Lightning flashed. I saw the creature climbing. He went straight up a cliff. Two years had passed since he came alive. Was this his first crime? I didn't know. Would he cause more harm? Day dawned. I hurried home. I wanted to tell what I knew about the killer. But I thought about my story. I had met the creature on the mountain. If someone told me that, I would call them crazy. Who could arrest such a giant? I decided to stay quiet. I hadn't seen my family in six years. Ernest met me at the door. "Come in, dearest Victor!" he said. "Having you here will help Father and Elizabeth. Poor William! He was our pride and joy!" he cried. "But the murderer has been caught-" "The murderer caught? How can that be? Who could catch him?" "I don't understand," said Ernest. "We're very upset. Who could believe that Justine Moritz could have done it? She was always so good to us. She was more than a servant. She was a friend.” "Poor Justine. It must be wrong. Everyone must know that. Who could believe it?" "No one did. At first. The evidence is strong. The trial is today." Ernest said Justine became ill. It was on the morning William's body was found. She had been ill for a few days. Someone else was washing her clothes. William's pin was found in her pocket. He had been wearing it. Justine couldn't explain. What a strange story. It didn't make sense. I said, "You're all wrong. I know the murderer. It's not Justine." Just then, my father entered. I saw his sadness. But he tried to be happy. For my sake. Elizabeth soon joined us. She kissed me on the cheek. "I have hope now that you're here,” she said. "Maybe you can prove that Justine is innocent." "She is innocent. I'll prove it. Don't worry," I said. "I'm sure the truth will come out," my father said. The trial didn't prove Justine's innocence. She told her story to the court. She had spent time with her aunt. She met a man while she was walking home. He told her a boy was lost. She found out it was William. She was very upset. She looked for him for a long time. The gates of the city closed. She spent the night in a barn. Some heavy footsteps woke her up. She went back to the Frankenstein home. She didn't know how she got the pin. Elizabeth spoke about Justine. She said how good she had been to the family. But Justine was found guilty. Two days later she was hanged. Elizabeth was very troubled. I was horrified. I cried at the graves of William and Justine. They were the first victims of my horrible creation.
