Be able to apply strategies to cultivate and enhance the development of your values, vision and goals. VALUES Values Values Values Values are your foundational beliefs. Values can also be defined as principles or standards of behaviour and one's judgement of what is important in life. Synonyms = morals, code of conduct and ethics. Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They determine your priorities. Values are usually fairly stable, yet they don’t have strict limits or boundaries. As you move through life, your values may change. Math: Satisfaction and contentment = Values + Behaviour The importance of Values – Understanding your values is essential to success. – Values provide a clear direction or sense of purpose. – As you experience the diversity that defines the university experience, your values are likely to be challenged, which generally leads to positive growth. – Our values represent what matters most to us, which means that they guide our decisions. – Clarifying your values will help you determine which goals you really want to pursuit and where to direct your motivation. – If you are unclear as to your values, then you are like a ship without a rudder. – Evaluation of how your life turned out. Passive income ACTIVITY Core Values Self- Assessment Values at the Core – By taking time to examine your personal values, managing your life will become easier and make more sense. – Values can be things you can’t exactly see or touch, like love or respect, or things that are visible and real, like family or money. – Values can conflict with one another (e.g. honesty and kindness). – Once you define your values, they can help you make everyday choices, as well as big decisions. – There is a great inner satisfaction that comes from living a life tied to core values. Live this and be that person. Begin with the end in mind VISION Vision refers to the ability to think about or plan the future with imagination or wisdom. Your personal vision is how you commit to living your life. It influences all areas including family, spirituality, physical well-being, leisure, and work. A clear personal vision is an integration of your abilities, interests, personality, values, goals, skills and experience, family of origin, as well as stage of adult development. Personal Life Vision(synonyms) A dream; A mental picture that guides and directs your life; A blueprint to construct your life; A description of who you want to be and what you value; A specific statement of what you want to do in life that motivates you to keep going towards your dream; A documented purpose; The capacity to see things as they could be; A function of the heart; Empowerment towards action. ACTIVITY Begin with the end in mind The Purpose of Developing a Vision – Vision provides clarity for the future while directing us to place our attention in the present. – If you have a clear vision of where you want to go, you are not as easily distracted by the many possibilities and agendas that otherwise divert you” – Encourages you to think deeply about your life. – Helps you to articulate and embody your deepest beliefs and aspirations. – It firmly imprints your values and purposes in your mind so they become part of you. – Serves as your moral compass. – Vision needs action/behaviour to live out values Examples of Personal Life Vision Statements ₁ - “To have fun in my journey through life and learn from my mistakes” – Richard Branson, Founder of The Virgin Group. ₂ - “To be the person my children look to with pride when they say, “This is my dad.” To be the one my children come to for love, comfort, and understanding. To be the friend known as caring and always willing to listen empathetically to their concerns. To be a person not willing to win at the cost of another’s. To be a person who can feel pain and not want to hurt another(Empathy). To be the person who speaks for the one that cannot, to listen for the one that cannot hear, see for the one without sight, and have the ability to say, “You did that, not I.” To have my deeds always match my words through the grace of God.” ₃ - “My personal vision is to have a life of meaning for myself and others. It is important to me to live my life in a way that shows kindness, care, and concern for family and friends and even strangers. Earn respect for myself based on a recognition of my accomplishments and abilities, maintains a sense of appreciation of the beauty of nature, and a sense of humour. I want to have a career/life that includes constant learning and improvement for myself, but that also creates an atmosphere of pleasurable learning and improvement for others. I want to work with and around people, and it is important to me that they like me; but it is even more important to me that they feel that I have helped them in some way – not necessarily that I do a specific good deed, but more that some kindness or thoughtfulness or wisdom of mine has touched them.” ₃ - “My personal vision is to have a life of meaning for myself and others. What am I inspired to do with my life? What would I want to do more than anything else, even if I was never paid for it? What do I love to do the most? What are my talents? At the end of my life, what would I want to have accomplished? What legacy do I want to leave behind? Create your Personal Life Vision Statement Step 1: – Create a Vision Board. – A Vision Board is a tool that helps us to clarify, concentrate and maintain focus on our personal life vision. Take an A3 or larger cardboard and collect images, words, affirmations, pictures, photos, Scripture, and/or articles from magazines or newspapers or any other source that represent your vision. Place it where you can see it every day. Your Vision Board will point you in the right direction when writing your personal vision statement. HOMEWORK Vision Board Step 2: Write down your answers or thoughts for the following. The answers you develop through reflection on these questions will be the basis of your personal vision statement. Interest Awareness Hopes and Dreams Step 2: Interest Awareness 1. Reflect on what you enjoy doing and what makes you happy. 2. List what you are truly interested in and passionate about. Hopes and Dreams List your hopes and dreams for your future for the following categories. Education: Career: Financial: Social: Pleasure: Family / Relationships: Physical / Health: Spiritual / Emotional: Travel / Adventure: Step 3: Visualize your future. Close your eyes and picture yourself in the future. It may be 10, 20, or 25 years from today. Visualize the person you are. Think about the following: Name and age Where you are? What you are doing? How you feel? Who you are with? What you have accomplished in your life? Step 4: Draft a written statement Write in the first person and make statements about the future you hope to achieve. (Be conscious) Write the statements in present tense as if you are already making them happen in your life. (Planning) Fully articulate the vision you want for your life and your future. (Specific) Include the important aspects of your life. Make it realistic. Make it vivid and descriptive. Make it impactful and inspiring to you. Step 5: Revise your statement After you have drafted your first version, think about it, make notes and revisions. After you had a chance to make some changes, create a second draft and then again review that for possible modifications. Once you have formed a permanent statement, post it where you will see it daily so that it can inspire you to achieve you goals. HOMEWORK Personal Vision Statement GOALS Goals are the ends toward which you direct your effort. Goals are things you want to achieve, things you aim for as you pursue a certain course of action. You can improve your academic performance at university by learning to set goals that motivate you to do well and that increases your chances for success. Goals provide the motive for the effort you expend when completing a task. Without goals there would be no action. By setting goals, you can make decisions about how to spend your day – You can decide what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and even how hard to work on it. Goal-setting creates a “road map” for where you want to go. You are able to select the most appropriate methods for reaching your goal, check your progress toward your goal and also make adjustments to your goal and methods as needed. Goals can also help you increase your level of motivation. Achieving your goals will also increase your motivation - Each time you achieve one of your goals, there are two important outcomes: You experience a sense of accomplishment and You increase your self-efficacy (your belief that you can successfully complete the task) Another benefit of setting goals is improvement in your ability to focus your attention. Long-term Goals – Long-term goals are the objectives you set for yourself for the end of the year, for a couple of years from now, for ten to twenty years from now, or even for a lifetime. – These goals represent major life outcomes. Short-term Goals – Short-term goals are the intermediate steps between setting a long-term goal and achieving it. – The Steps toward achieving the long-term goals you have set for yourself. – Short-term goals can be set for an hour from now, or for the end of the day, week, month, or term. – Completing a reading assignment, writing an essay, getting a B in a course, attending all classes; employing effective strategies in study time, and preparing for a test. – By accomplishing daily, weekly and semester goals, you move closer to your long-range academic, career, and personal goals. Goal-Setting – A series of sequential steps: – setting a plan of action, – assessing the steps to take, and – setting new goals based on what you learn and the interests that develop during goal achievement. Define long- and short- term goals Assess goal achievement Create and process + Implement opportunities your action fro new plan learning Assess Achieve progress and the long-term effectiveness goal of each short- term goal Make necessary adjustments to goals and methods Types of Goals – Academic – Personal – Career ACTIVITY List your Goals Characteristics of Goals – To be both useful and motivating, the goals you set must have some important characteristics. Goals for Growth (G4G) are: – self-chosen, – Specific, – Measurable, – moderately challenging(Attainable), – Realistic, – finite(Time bound) and – positive Self- Chosen Moderately Positive challenging G4G Finite Measurable Specific ACTIVITY Goals for Growth Write your Action Plan – Writing an action plan is the same as making a commitment. – An action plan lists short-term goals, or steps that will help you reach your long-term goal.
