GULFSTREAM G650ER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION MANUAL RUDDER COCKPIT SENSORS — SYSTEM DESCRIPTION 1. General A. Description Cockpit sensors generate electronic signals that are sent to Flight Control Computers (FCCs) and Backup Flight Control Unit (BFCU). Commands are based on control displacement produced by the pilot, copilot or Autopilot (AP) system servos. See Figure 1. Dedicated position sensors are connected to the following pilot and copilot controls: Control columns Control wheels Rudder pedals Cockpit sensors provide data to the following: FCCs BFCU AP system FDR The FCCs provide an excitation signal to the sensors and receive a voltage signal back that is proportional to the applied force. Voltage change indicates position and force commands. When changes occur, the FCCs or BFCU command Remote Electronic Units (REUs) to energize hydraulic actuators that move the flight surface to commanded position. NOTE: The BFCU commands are ignored by REUs unless there is a total failure of both FCCs. 2. Component Details A. Rudder Force Sensor Rudder force sensors are installed in the pilot and copilot feel system load path. Force sensors detect pilot action. The sensors are in line with a pushrod running between the rudder pedal assembly and control module. Each sensor is a single channel strain gauge that connects as follows: Pilot side connects to FCC No. 1 Copilot side connects to FCC No. 2 The FCCs provide data on an ARINC 429 (A429) data bus to Modular Avionics Units (MAUs). The MAUs transmit force data to the FDR. The force sensor provides data to satisfy FAA / EASA FDR requirements. 27-22-00 Page 1 August 15/14 GULFSTREAM G650ER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION MANUAL B. Rudder Control Module RVDT The rudder control module RVDT cluster contains five individual RVDT sensors that measure rudder position. The RVDT sensors are located radially around a common shaft that simultaneously drives the sensors. The RVDTs provide electrical inputs to the FCCs as follows: Two sensors provide data to FCC No. 1 Two sensors provide data to FCC No. 2 One sensor provides data to the BFCU Each FCC interfaces with one sensor. Commanded position data is provided to the FCCs and BFCU. The FCCs and BFCU use control laws to determine what action to take. The FCCs send electronic signals to the rudder REUs in order to actuate the hydraulic powered rudder actuators to move the rudder. Conventional rudder pedals drive the RVDTs through mechanical linkage and gears. If a mechanical disconnect with the rudder pedals occurs, the cluster of RVDTs only center if the main RVDT cluster shaft is sheared. 4. Controls and Indications A. Circuit Breakers The system is protected by the following circuit breakers: NOMENCLATURE PANEL LOCATION POWER SOURCE RUD EBHA PRI REER B1 UPS 28VDC RUD EBHA SEC REER B2 UPS 28VDC RUD HA REER B7 R ESS 28VDC RUD EBHA PWR N/A EBHA PDB (tail compartment) EBHA BUS 28VDC B. CAS Messages The CAS messages for the system are shown in the following table: MESSAGE COLOR MESSAGE DESCRIPTION Yaw Trim Auto Center Blue Yaw trim automatic centering feature is active. No action is needed if this is desired condition. Yaw Trim Nose Left Limit Blue Yaw trim has reached its capacity in nose left direction. Yaw Trim Nose Right Limit Blue Yaw trim has reached its capacity in nose right direction. Rudder Steering Fail Amber Rudder steering failed. Rudder Steering Off Amber Rudder steering is off. Rudder Single Actuator Amber Single rudder actuator failed. Notify maintenance for corrective action. Attempt FLT CTRL RESET. Rudder Fail Amber Both REUs failed or loss of rudder command. Continue flight within flight envelope limitations. Attempt FLT CTRL RESET. 27-22-00 Page 2 August 15/14 GULFSTREAM G650ER SYSTEM DESCRIPTION MANUAL MESSAGE COLOR MESSAGE DESCRIPTION Yaw Authority Limit Amber Rudder approaching maximum displacement. Adjust flight condition as necessary. Yaw Damper Fail Amber Yaw damper has failed. Continue flight within flight envelope limitations. NOTE: The FCC status data required by the flightcrew is shown on the main displays as CAS messages and synoptic page data. 5. Operation A. Rudder Cockpit Sensors During flight, aircraft yaw control is maintained by the rudder. The pilot and copilot use conventional rudder pedals to control rudder movement as follows: Left rudder pedal moves rudder trailing edge left (aircraft nose left) Right rudder pedal moves rudder trailing edge right (aircraft nose right) Rudder pedal position is measured by RVDT sensors contained within the RVDT cluster. The RVDT sensors send position data to the FCCs and the BFCU. The FCCs send commanded position to the rudder REUs through the A429 digital data buses. The REUs actuate the EBHA and EHSA manifolds to move the rudder to its commanded position. 27-22-00 Page 3 August 15/14
