REVIEWER LIT 101 – PHILIPPINE LITERATURE LITERATURE - Origin of the term – litera which means letters - Everything that has ever written - It illuminates life - It is our life’s story including its struggles, ideals, failures, sacrifice and happiness - It is part of the seven arts ARTISTRY – quality which appeals to our sense of beauty INTELLECTUAL VALUE – a literary work that stimulates thought and enriches our mental life by making us realize fundamental truths about life and human nature SPIRITUAL VALUE – good literature elevates the spirit by bringing out moral values which makes us better person PERMANENCE – a great work of literature endures. It can be read again and again as each reading gives fresh delight and new insights and open new worlds of meaning and experience POETRY – appeal – to the emotion POETRY – aim – stir the imagination and set an idea of how life should be POETRY – form – written in stanza or verse form PROSE – appeal – to the intellect PROSE – aim – to convince, instruct, imitate PROSE – form – written in paragraph form PROSE DRAMA – consist entirely of dialogue in prose and meant to be acted on stage PROSE FICTION – invented, imagined or feigned to be true ORATION – eloquent, rhetorical sometimes merely bombastic speech, delivered on some special occasion ADDRESS – formal, carefully prepared speech and usually attribute importance to the speaker or the speech AUTOBIOGRAPHY – written account of man’s life written by himself EULOGY – writing in praise of dead person, event or thing TALK – suggest informality and applied either to an impromptu speech POETRY - Its meaning is creating or making - A kind of language that says it more and says it more intensely than ordinary language does NARRATIVE POETRY – a kind of poem that tells a story SHORT STORY – a fictional narrative in prose that can be read in one sitting NOVEL – it differs from short story because of several complications and twists to its plot ESSAY - a short literary composition which is expository in nature DRAMA - greek word dran which means to do, a form of literature in which story is told through the words and actions of characters. It is meant to be performed. OBJECTIVE REALITY – made up of human actions and experiences SUBJECTIVE REALITY – deals with human apprehension and comprehension POINT OF VIEW - it is the writer’s feeling and attitude toward his subject ; determines who tells the story ; the narrator of the story FIRST PERSON – uses the pronoun I THIRD PERSON – writer is merely the observer and uses pronoun in the third person OMNISCIENT – the writer – narrator sees all SENSE – revealed through the meaning of words, images & symbols SOUND – the result of a combination of elements SPEAKER – voice that talks to the reader DICTION – denotative and connotative meanings WORD ORDER – natural and unnatural arrangement of words THEME AND CONTENT - Present ideas, describe events, interpret experiences - Appraise, criticize, expand, comment, celebrate - What is the main point of an essay FORM AND STRUCTURE - ORDERLY, SYSTEMATIC, LOGICAL MANNER - INDUCTIVE AND DEDUCTIVE ARE THE TWO MAJOR PATTERNS - INTRODUCTION, BODY, CONCLUSION THREE BASIC PARTS OF AN ESSAY - EXPOSITORY DEVICES ARE: DEFINITION, DESCRIPTION, NARRATION, ANALOGY LANGUAGE AND STYLE - Diction, Choice of topics, Personal bias and Attitude - Humorous, Whimsical, Satirical and Optimistic INFORMAL OR FAMILIAR ESSAY – it appeals more to the emotion than to the intellect FORMAL OR IMPERSONAL ESSAY – objective, clear, straightforward expression.
