Direct dental restorative materials can be placed directly into a tooth cavity within one office visit. Composite Amalgam Composite filling: a dental restorative material composed of mixture of plastic resin and powdered glass filler. They are used to repair cracked and decayed teeth. Retained in the cavity by mechanical retention. Available In capsules containing : 1. Mercury 2. Separator 3. Silver Alloys ( copper / tin / silver ) Steps of placing an amalgam restoration: 1. Prepare the cavity with undercuts (for mechanical retention). 2. Apply dentin desensitizer to block the exposed dentinal tubules.(Previously copal varnishes were used to block exposed dentinal tubules). 3. Wait for 30 sec then air dry. 4. Mix the amalgam in the amalgamator for 6-8 seconds. 5. Empty the contents of the capsule into a dappen dish. 6. Carry the amalgam from the dappen dish to the cavity using an amalgam carrier. 7. Place an increment of amalgam and condense using a condenser. 8. Repeat step 6-7 till the cavity is filled completely. 9. Once the cavity is filled, burnish it using burnisher. 10. Give the restoration its anatomy using a carver. 11. Burnish the amalgam. Indirect restoration Indirect restorations must be created outside of the mouth before being mounted on the affected tooth.
