Religion 1 Test Review 1. Moses’ last act was that he called the Israelites to obey God’s command. 2. The Israelites were being called to show all the nations what God was about. 3. The book of Joshua picks up right after the death of Moses. 4. The first part of the book of Joshua is Joshua leading the Israelites to the promised land. 5. Joshua is the new Moses. 6. Joshua sends spies into Canaan. 7. Joshua encounters an Angel of the Lord and asks him “Are you for us or against us.” 8. The battle the Israelites were fighting was not their battle, but God’s battle, they were supporters in God’s battle. 9. The two battles we talked about were the Battle of Jericho and the Battle of AI. 10. At the battle of Jericho on the 7th day the trumpets were blown and the walls of the city fell down. 11. In scripture we see that there were Canaanites who turned to God. 12. The moral corruption that took place by the Canaanites was Child Sacrifice and Improper sexual relations. 13. In scripture, the use of the terminology “totally destroyed” when talking about the defeat of Canaanites is not always meant literally. 14. God called Israel to seek peace with all other nations. 15. After years of battles, an older Joshua divides up the promised land to the twelve tribes. 16. God fulfilled his promise to Abraham when it came to the promised land. 17. Joshua gave 2 speeches to the people. 18. Judges, starts with the Death of Joshua. 19. The book of Judges is littered with the failure of Israel. 20. The book of Judges gets its name from the leaders they had at the time. 21. The judges in the Book of Judges were more of military and political leaders. 22. The book of Judges has a lot of violence. 23. The book of Judges is very violent because of Moral Corruption and Bad Leadership. 24. The 3rd part of the book of judges shows Israel’s corruption as a whole. 25. The first part of the book of judges sets the stage for Israel’s failure. 26. The opening section of Judges lists a bunch of Canaanite groups Israel failed to capture. 27. In Judges God was trying to keep the Israelites from being morally corrupted 28. God called Israel to be a Holy People. 29. The Israelites moved in alongside with the Canaanites and adopted their practices. 30. The Israelites go into a downward spiral that always ends with them going right back to sin. 31. Eventually Israel would see the error in their ways in that they were sinning and start to repent, but would always go right back to sin. 32. The Judges we talked about in the book of Judges were Gideon, Jephthah and Samson. 33. Samson murdered a lot of people. 34. In those days, Israel had no King and everyone did what was right in their own eyes” is something said in scripture that perfectly describes the book of Judges. 35. Micah builds a private temple in the book of Judges. 36. A prophet is a special messenger of God. 37. There are two types of prophets, major and minor. 38. A major prophet is not more important than a minor prophet. 39. The three major prophets we talked about are Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Isaiah. 40. The Prophets received their prophecies through voices, visions, and dreams. 41. The messages the prophets were preaching were very unpopular. 42. The main purpose of the messages being preached was to convert people towards God. 43. Ezekiel used street theatre to get across the message of Hope and Destruction. 44. Jeremiah uses the comparison of Israel as an Adulterous wife. 45. Isaiah is quoted more in the New Testament than any other prophetic book. 46. Wisdom is personified as Lady in proverbs. 47. A majority of the Pauline Epistles addressed Communities of Churches. 48. Our blessed mother is mentioned the most in the gospel of Luke. 49. "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight” is from the book of Proverbs. 50. The Pauline Epistles are arranged approximately from longest to shortest. 51. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke are considered the Synoptic Gospels. 52. The Gospels were handed down orally in preaching. 53. Matthew, the author of the Gospel of Matthew was a Tax collector. 54. "A time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to mourn and a time to dance” is from the book of Ecclesiastes. 55. Pentecost occurs in the Gospel of Luke. 56. “Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand.” is from the Book of Job. 57. The Gospel of Luke lays out eyewitness testimonies that paint the Good News that Jesus is the true messiah. 58. Matthew is a Gospel of comfort and encouragement. 59 All the Gospels speak about the fact that the Death of Jesus would be pointless if He had not Resurrected. 60. The standard belief at the time in which the Book of Proverbs was written is that a Good Person would be rewarded with good health, material wealth, and good fortune. 61. Nicodemus seems to represent the Christians who are silent or fearful about expressing their commitment to Christ. 62. The two types of epistles are Catholic and Pauline. 63.
