RAIDERS OF SULU SEA Background of the Producer It is a Documentary film produced by Oak3 Films in 1996. It is Directed by Idzman Oathman It was televised internationally by Discovery Channel and History Channel in 2008. About the Documentary It talks about the "slave raiding " activities of the Muslim Tribes in the Southern Mindanao and how brutal it is. How the Muslim Tribes showcase their maritime skills and weapons. The conflict between the Muslim Tribes and the Spaniards. The reasons of Muslim Tribes resistance against the Spaniards. The Slave Raiding The Muslims were focused on captivating innocent people to become slaves. They captive people by pretending as fishermen and will declare it as slave raiding. The Muslim raiders bear a hole in their captives palm where they can insert a string to tie them in order for them to not scape in anyway. Spaniards Vs. The Muslim Tribes -The attempt of the Spaniards to take control of the economic activity and to propagate Christianity in the Southern Mindanao resulted into conflicts between the Spaniards and the Moros. The 3 tribes united namely: the Illanun, Samal and the Tausugs with their 3,000 men and 100 boats to attack the Fort Pilar. Rajah Dalasi who led these 3 tribes. Who is Rajah Dalasi? -was a leader of the Sulu Sultanate and is often noted for his influence during a time when piracy and regional power struggles were prominent. The 3 Tribes Namely: 1. THE ILLANUNS They were known as the fierce of Maritime Force They were the very important Tribe in the piracy history. The Iranun were traditionally sailors and were renowned for their ship-building skills.. 2. THE SAMAL They are the expert slaying group Also known as Sama or Northern Sindama They occupied chain of the Islands between Basilan and Sulu Island. 3. THE TAUSUG TRIBE They controlled the Sulu Sultanate Known for its fierce and widespread political powers. Those tribes showcase different kinds of maritime vessels The 3 Vessels used by the raiders of the sulu sea : 1.Lanong 2.Garay 3.Salisipan LANONG -this is actually the biggest among the three vessels. It was prominently used for piracy and slave raids from the mid-18th century to early 19th century. GARAY -were traditional native warships of the Samal people in the Philippines. It is considered to be the fastest of the three which carries around 60-80 men depending on the size of the garay SALISIPAN -the smallest vessel and this vessel was used by the raiders when they are near in the shore and pretend to be a harmless fisherman. Weapons Used by the Raiders of the Sulu Sea: Barong Kris or Kalis Kampilan BARONG -It is a sword with a single-edged leaf-shaped blade made of thick tempered steel. It is a one- meter long weapon used in close combat battle to cut the Spanish firearms down. KRIS OR KALIS -It is double-edged with a wavy blade, it can make quick work of an enemy in close combat, the reason for its curvings is for easy slashing. The steel would penetrate the bone, and it would stick so it will be very hard to pull. KAMPILAN -the longest sword used by the raiders, primarily the Illanun. It is a heavy single-edge sword. At the tip of the blade are two horn projecting from the blunt side which is used to pick up the head of a decapitated body. The Fort Pilar -The Spanish build the Fort Pilar which serves as their territory defenses for their military presence at the South. Fort Pilar is a concrete 10 meter high fortress and 2 acres wide. On December 8, 1720 in Zamboanga City(Southern Peninsula of the Philippines) an attacked happened at Fort Pilar. Rajah Dalasi fight aggressively into battles with only swords against the firearms and cannons of the Spaniards. But their attacked didn't succeed. It is not easy for the Spaniards, but with the help of the Steamship that they bought from England, they caught the boats of the Muslims. The steamship is faster and bigger than the Muslims' boats. The Brave Moros -When the 3 tribes failed the attempt. It is said that, they killed all of the women and children in their tribes because they don't want that each of them will suffer against the Spaniards. This actually proves that the Muslims fight not only for the economic value but most especially for their culture and religion. The End.
