Try a different radio 2. Change to a conventional channel:  Using an OIC’s portable, go to Zone 7V and use either talkgroup “7V2 VHF DISP R” or “7V1 VHF OPS R”  All other radios go to Zone “MA 800 IO” and use talkgroup “8CALL90” 3 ABOUT… Montgomery County operates a simulcast 22‐site 20‐channel digital trunked 800 MHz radio system. The radio system is shared by all County users, the municipal police departments, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The system is designed as a Simulcast System. This configuration specifies that the system transmits (and receives) simultaneously from all 22 radio sites in the County, this helps in‐building system coverage. The 20 radio channels provide up to 36 voice paths for communication (one channel is used as the control channel to coordinate network traffic and some of the channels can host two conversations simultaneously) and they are trunked (assigned on demand when the radios transmit) by a central controller. When the radio system is operating normally, with a controller assigning channels and the radio consoles used by the dispatchers at PSCC and AECC connected to the system, the system is deemed to be in Wide Area mode; this is the way the system operates almost all the time (Normal Operations). If the radio consoles are disconnected from the rest of the system, the system is deemed to be operating in Site Trunking mode. In Site Trunking a central controller still assigns the channels on demand, but the users at PSCC and AECC must use backup resources to communicate with field users. In this mode the system’s capacity and coverage remain the same, but advanced features that rely on the radio consoles are no longer available; things like displaying unit IDs and emergencies, and the ability to patch (or interconnect) different radio system resources (Site Trunking Operations) If there are no central controllers available (the system has three, in two different locations that the system automatically switches between as needed to maintain trunking) to assign the channels on demand the system is deemed to be operating Failsoft mode. In Failsoft the 20 channels can no longer be shared by all the users because there is no controller available, that means that the radios revert channels using mapping defined in the radio’s configuration; for MCFRS this means operations consolidate from dozens of talkgroups down to 6 channels. Failsoft greatly restricts the radio system’s capacity but coverage remains the same. (Failsoft Operations) Two VHF channels are also normally used in conjunction with the 800 MHz system: 7A1 and 7V2. Both VHF channels are simulcast like the trunked system but do not use the trunked system’s central controllers. 7V2 is always patched to 7A2 DISP, and 7V1 is normally patched to 7A1 OPS 1; the 7V1 patch can be moved to other radio resources to support operational needs. 4 MCFRS Specific Radio Fleet Map Zone #
