Pluralism b. Power Elite c. Autonomous State d. Feminism 1. Pluralism / Pluralist Theory of Power- POWER BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE! Pluralism- power is diffused across the public. Two Kinds of Pluralism: Group Pluralism & Elite Pluralism Power Elite (Elite Theory) This theory believes that it is the dominant groups that control the main institutions in society (Glasberg, D.S. & Shannon, 2011). Feminism Theory This theory begins with the idea that an understanding of power cannot be attained without a robust analysis of gender. Autonomous State/ State-Centered Theories State-centered theories argue that states pursue at upholding its own interest, independent of other interests and the public it serves (Glasberg & Shannon, 2011). John Gaventa’s Theory of Power The social elite make use of their power mainly to preclude the sudden rise of disputes in their sphere of influence, and to achieve social quiescence. Michael Mann’s Theory of Power- Distributional & Collective There are two types of power: a. Distributional: it is held by individuals and is their ability to get others to do what they want; b. Collective: it is employed by groups or is either exerted by one group over another or may depend on the control of inanimate objects.
