ENGLISH 7 PRAYER WORD OF THE DAY READ AND IDENTIFY THE MAIN IDEA OF THE GIVEN SELECTION Thinking about the 1990s brings back fond memories for me about fashion and popular culture. During the 1990s, I really enjoyed watching Friends on television every Thursday night. I really wanted Rachel’s haircut—I think every girl wanted Rachel’s haircut back then! Rachel’s haircut went really well with the Guess Jeans that were so popular in the 1990s. I remember all the advertisements for Guess and Calvin Klein Jeans that were in each month’s Sassy magazine. I do not think Sassy magazine exists anymore, but it was one of the most popular magazines for young women in the 1990s. FEATURES AND KINDS OF A PARAGRAPH OBJECTIVES: recognize the features of paragraphs; identify kinds of a paragraph and its purpose; and compose a paragraph about the current trends and issues in the Philippines PARAGRAPH A paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and are all related to a single topic. Paragraphs can contain many different kinds of information. Regardless of the kind of information they contain, all paragraphs share certain characteristics. One of the most important of these is a topic sentence. PARTS OF PARAGRAPH TOPIC SENTENCE Topic sentence is usually the first sentence of the Paragraph. It carries the main idea of the paragraph. SUPPORTING SENTENCES The supporting sentences or the body of the paragraph contains the details that strengthen the idea in the topic sentence. CONCLUDING SENTENCES The concluding sentence restates the idea presented in the topic sentence. It expresses the same idea in the topic sentence using a different set of words. FOUR KINDS OF PARAGRAPH DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH A descriptive paragraph is a focused and detail-rich account of a specific topic. Writers use language that appeals to the reader's five senses: sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch. EXAMPLE OF DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH Mangoes come in many sizes and colors. Some are bright green, some are bright yellow, some are bright orange and some are bright red. Some are even all four colors at once. That is just the skin. The flesh is usually bright yellow or orange. You can smell a ripe mango several meters away. It smells like a delicious edible flower. It is smooth and just slightly soft in the hand. When you peel it, the juice drips like sweet, sticky nectar down your fingers and forearms to your elbows. When you bite into the mango, your mouth explodes with fruity sugar. The mango is the king of fruit for many reasons. It is a garden of color, aroma and flavor. NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH Narrative paragraphs tell about an event or series of events, usually in chronological order, taking the reader from the beginning of the event to the end. EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH Expository writing explores, shares, explains, or defines a specific subject or idea. This type of writing does not include the writer's opinion or tell a story; its goal is not to persuade, and the writer's voice should be neutral. EXAMPLE OF EXPOSITORY PARAGRAPH Advances in science and technology have made the use of "green" energy possible. In places where climate conditions permit, people are able to use solar energy or wind energy for power. Solar energy is the use of sunlight for energy and power. Humans are able to harness the energy of the sun by installing solar panels on their homes or businesses. Humans have also found ways to harness the power of the wind by using wind turbines to capture wind energy. Both of these forms of "green" energy are being used more and more. PERSUASIVE PARAGRAPH The main aim of a persuasive paragraph is to make an effective argument. Thus, persuasive paragraphs are written as if the writer is attempting to convince their audience to adopt a new belief or behaviour.
