Themes Related to Psychology as a Field of Study Theme 1: Psychology is empirical - Empiricism is the knowledge that should be acquired through observation. Theme 2: Psychology is Theoretically Diverse Theme 3: Psychology Evolves in a Socio-historical Context - Society and history impact psychology. What happens in psychology and what happens in history are interconnected. - Ex: Homosexuality was deleted from the DSM-II as it was categorized as a mental disorder. Theme 4/5: Behavior is Determined by Multiple Causes, Behavior is Shaped by Cultural Heritage - Behaviors are very complex, and you can't identify behaviors in a single case because they usually need to be completed. - Behavior is also shaped by a community's culture, beliefs, values, norms, institutions, and products. - Ex: one culture may have a more positive outlook on life than another culture, which may have a more negative outlook. Theme 6: Heredity and Environment Jointly Influence Behavior - Genetics and experience jointly influence individuals' intelligence, temperament, personality, and susceptibility to psychological disorders. - People can also develop psychological disorders physically, ex: Drugs. - Psychological disorders can be born and made. Theme 7: People’s Experience of the World is Subjective - We impose organization on stimulations to which we usually pay attention. - Ex: In forensics, people don't understand the same thing when they see it. While people in forensics are always looking for the same thing, that doesn't mean they’re all paying attention to the same thing. Psychometrics measures behavior and capacities. Clinical Psychologists take a non-medical approach. They cannot prescribe medication. Industrial/Organizational Psychologists focus on workplace productivity and organization and behaviors. Psychoanalysis focuses on the unconscious mind. Humanistic psychology focuses on personal growth and self-actualization. ‘The whole person” Cross-cultural psychology focuses on understanding how culture influences behavior. Module 1 Assignment Identify the following about the article: Goal/Objective: To see the difference in the mental health of people who connect with nature versus the people who don't connect with nature during quarantine. Hypothesis: When you have a stronger bond with nature, your mental health will improve versus having a weak connection with nature. Main results: Connecting with nature will improve your mental health, especially in times of isolation. The topic is interesting because I’ve seen many other studies highlighting these facts, and it's interesting to see different perspectives on it. These results are not surprising.
