Rather, they serve as a guide to encourage you to look at what you're eating and consider healthier options at each meal. 2. If you present yourself visually and behaviorally as a successful person, others will respond to you accordingly. First impressions really do count. Whether we like it or not, appearance is our first filter — whether in person or online. Everything on the outside contributes to others' initial impression of you. So make it a good one! Power Dressing The term power dressing relates to a fashion style typical of the business and politics environment of the 1970s and 1980s. Today, the expression "power dressing" is not more commonly used, but the style is still popular. The concept of power dressing was brought to popularity by John T. Molloy's manuals Dress for success (1975) and Women: dress for success (1980). It means dressing to impress. It incorporates stylish casual flair and make certain that your everyday professional look is polished, dignified, and office-friendly. Knowing the Dress Codes A dress code is a set of rules, often written, pertaining to clothing. Dress codes are created out of social perceptions, and norms, and vary based on purpose, circumstances, and occasions. Different societies and cultures are likely to have different dress codes. Dress codes are also symbolic indications of different social ideas, including social class, cultural identity, attitude towards comfort, tradition and political or religious affiliations. Paying attention to grooming and taking care of your clothing demonstrates respect for yourself and for others. Taking Care of your Grooming When you attend to personal grooming, do it at home or in a restroom, not in public. Consider the following: Hair: Clean, shiny, well-cut hair looks great and never goes out of style. Comb it often to keep it neat. Nails: The basics of nail care include neatly trimmed nails. If you wear polish, maintain it regularly. If you’re a nail biter, keep your nails short and filed to prevent them from looking ragged. And don’t forget your feet when wearing open-toed shoes! Breath: To keep breath fresh, try to brush your teeth after lunch as well as in the morning and at night. Regular flossing and brushing your tongue helps control odor. Breath mints can help, and it’s a good idea to keep some handy. Body odor: A daily bath or shower and use of a combination deodorant/anti-perspirant is the best defense against body odor. Perfume and cologne: Apply perfume or cologne sparingly. When choosing a scent, opt for something light for daytime. Taking Care of Your Wardrobe Clothes send a message about how you want others to see you. You clothes should be spotless at the start of each day. Clothes should be: Clean: Don’t be tempted to wear anything with spots or stains, or that’s just plain dirty. Neat: Clothes should be free of wrinkles, lint, holes, and missing buttons. Hems should be intact. Investing in a few clothing-care tools and learning how to use them is also a good idea. Some of the basics are: ○ Iron and ironing board: Learn how to iron a blouse or dress shirt, trousers, and skirt. ○ Clothes brush or lint roller: Even if you clothes are clean, lint and pet hair will destroy your appearance. ○ Basic sewing kit: Learn how to sew on a button and repair a basic hem. ○ Shoe shine kit: Regular care of your shoes to make them look great. PROFESSIONAL IMAGE Dressing for success is an important part of personality development and making a good impression. There are three common levels of professional dress: business professional, smart casual, and business casual. The differences between these types of dress are often subtle, but important. They reveal who you are, what is happening within you, and what you need to do to move towards growth. (Bo Sanchez) Effects of Emotions 1. Glandular and Muscular Excessive secretions of glands which may affect the normal functions of the body. Digestion, respiration, excretion, tenseness in the muscles, and faster heartbeat. 2. Mental Strong emotions can block the learning process. Unmanageable strong emotions can retard growth and development of the mind. Pleasant emotions can arouse enthusiasm of persons, accelerate the learning process, and may result in the fulfillment of the person. Don't let your emotions overpower your intelligence. 3. Physical A person with intense emotions would have either a reddish face or pale face, hair standing all over the body, profuse perspiration, trembling of the legs and joints, uncontrollable tears. Handling your Emotions Learn to laugh at yourself. Use relaxation techniques. Understand and accept that ‘nobody is indeed perfect' no matter how you try. When angry, be calm and think on how you can resolve those things that made you angry. Wrong words may just aggravate the situation. Love and be loved. Try to channel your energy to more productive activities. Divert your attention to good things and memories. Avoid those that make you highly emotional. Learn to forgive and forget. Be reminded that you are the ‘Master of your soul, the captain of your ship.’ Pray and seek for peace of mind. Improve self-esteem. Listen to your favorite music, read books, watch a film. Interact with others. Be positive about life. Have a make-over, change your looks, ‘get-up’ and rearrange your room.
