The range of years in 21st-century literature was written from (roughly) the year 2001 to the present. New literary works created within the last two decades Written by contemporary authors Deals with current themes and reflects a technological culture Often breaks traditional writing rules The 21st Century Reader Who is the 21st century reader? grew up with technology capable of navigating and interpreting digital formats 21st Century Literary Genres Manga Japanese term for comics Itis used in the English-speaking world as a generic term for all comic books and graphic novels originally published in Japan. Manga usually follows the traditional style as found in Japan. Japanese manga is to be read from the right side to the left, opposite of traditional English books. Manga Graphic Novels Narrative in comic book formats Graphic novel is a narrative work in which the story is conveyed to the reader using comic form. The term is employed in a broad manner, encompassing non-fiction works and thematically linked short stories as well as fictional stories across a number of genres. Graphic Novel Halina Filipina An example of a graphic novel written by Arnold Arre Graphic Novels Illustrated Novels Story through text and illustrated images Usually, 50% of the narrative is presented without words. The reader must interpret the images in order to comprehend the whole story. Textual portions are presented in traditional form.
