CLASSIFICATIONS OF LITERATURE OBJECTIVES Identify the different classification of literature and discuss how the enrich to the readers understanding Appreciate the different literary forms that surfaced from the age of information technology Compare and contrast the various 21st century literary genres and the ones from the earlier genres/periods citing their elements, structures and traditions Produce a creative representation of a literary text by applying multimedia and ICT skills 1.1 FICTION 1. STRUCTURE It is a literary work of imaginative narration, either oral/written -It is composed of parts It describes imaginary events and or the organization of people (fantasy) something Its purpose is to entertain, let the readers think and feel -It sometimes shown in 1.2 NON-FICTION narrative stories It is literary work of “real life” (writing), order of narration / exposition based on occurrence or order of history and facts, real events and real people telling / written material It aims to convey knowledge, facts, on a topic or subject theories / concepts of a topic 2. FORM It refers to the work of style on how the elements of design are implemented It also refers to the arrangement of the elements in a composition 2.1 PROSE -It is a literary work that is spoken / written which gives information, relate events, express ideas or opinions -It is a literary medium that corresponds closely to everyday speech pattern Example: Drama (play) -most everyday writing Novels (fiction) -the language is typically straightforward without much decoration Short stories -ideas are concerned in sentences that are arranged into paragraphs 2.2 POETRY – It is a literary work expressed in verse, measure, rhythm sound and imaginative language that gives emotional response to an experience, feelings and facts 3.GENRE FICTION –incorporates fantastical and imaginary ideas from everyday life -presents human / life in 2 levels: 3.1 OBJECTIVE REALITY- actions / experiences 3.2 SUBJECTIVE REALITY – human apprehension and comprehension (categorized by either novel or short story) POETRY-It is a patterned form of verbal / written expressions of ideas that follows rhythmical terms with sense sound and structure elements ESSAY –It is a prose composition in a moderate length with exploration, evaluation and explanation of viewpoint about a particular topic or subject -It is mostly are non-fiction (ex. diary, memoirs, biographies, journals) DRAMA – It is a form of prose that is performed in front of an audience -It presents a story that is delivered entirely in dialogue and action (ex. Romeo and Juliet) 21ST CENTURY LITERARY GENRE CHICK LIT -It is written by women for women -It uses a strong female character who is trying to live in the modern world -Its plot is light-hearted smart and funny Upbeat, entertaining to read, written mostly by women that feature young female characters. These books can be about boys, friendship, family, fitting in, or vacations…almost always involve self- discovery, offer an uplifting ending, and spotlight characters that are easy for girls to relate to. Chick lit is genre fiction which addresses issues of modern womanhood, often humorously and lightheartedly. It depicts inspiring and strong female characters and those that want it to portray the reality of young women “grappling with modern life” EXAMPLE S HYPERPOETRY -It is also called as cyberpoetry -It could not be presented without the aid of computers -It includes verse with links to sub-poems or footnotes, poetry “generators”, poetry with movement or images Hypertext poetry is the new genre of literature that use the computer screen as medium, rather than the printed page. This literary work relies on the qualities unique to a digital environment, such as linked World Wide Web pages or effects such as sound and movement. Instead of writing confidential entries in a book that no one is supposed to see, people now can share their personal feelings and experiences with thousands of people around the world. Blogs are typically updated daily, monthly, or anywhere in between EXAMPLES The Roaming Kitchen is written by Cristina Sciarra, a writer and cook in New York. She combines her kitchen skills (she studied at Le Cordon Bleu and the Institute of Culinary Education) and writing talent (MFA in Fiction Writing) to post recipes, essays and photos. SPECULATIVE FICTION Often described as the ‘What if?’ genre, speculative fiction (spec-fic or SF) describes any work where the writer makes conjectures about a fictional scenario. Comes from the root word “speculate”- what if? Speculative fiction is fiction in which the author speculates upon the results of changing what’s real or possible, not how a character would react to a certain event, etc. -The setting is futuristic and involves supernatural elements -It also encompasses horror and science fiction works EXAMPLES TEXTTULA -It has its own origin in tanaga, a traditional Filipino poem which has 4 lines and 7 syllables each Ex. Mga texttula nila Atilla Roma and Adle Enriquez Also, poetry genre mastered by Frank G. Rivera- a filipino playwright , actor, and production designer. -He has won several awards including the 8th Annual Gawad Ustetika Awards in the Play category. Entire poems are written and read on mobile phones. could be in any type of poem as long as it has meter (sukat) and rhyme (tugma). KINDS OF TEXTULA/TEXT Sonnet- a fourteen-line poem with 10 syllables and hasTULA several rhyme schemes Haiku- consist of 3 lines wherein first and last lines have 5 syllables and the middle line has 7 syllables and rhymes at the end Dalit- consisting of four lines with eight syllables each and rhymes at the end Tanaga- consisting of four lines with seven syllables each with the same rhyme at the end of each line) Frank G. Whatever their length, pieces of flash fiction contain all the classic story elements we'd expect – protagonists, conflicts, obstacles or complications, and their resolution. It now includes a wide variety of types and lengths, from six word stories, Twitter fiction (140 characters or less) and drabbles (100 words exactly) to longer pieces of a few hundred words. GRAPHIC NOVEL -It utilizes pictures in narrating a long story -It has growing popularity -It includes manga and comics A type of text combining words and images—essentially a comic, although the term most commonly refers to a complete story presented as a book rather than a periodical The word comics denotes a periodical for children, published on a weekly or monthly basis, sold at newsstands or in specialty comic book stores, often with pages devoted to advertising and, when intended for younger readers, competitions and puzzles. In contrast, graphic novel is usually taken to mean a long comic narrative for a mature audience, published in hardback or paperback and sold in bookstores, with serious literary themes and sophisticated artwork.
