Plant Unit Study Guide Test: October 25th, 2024 Plant Unit Study Guide - Parts of a plant and their functions - Roots-take in water and nutrients from the soil, helps keep the plant in place - Stems-Hold the plant upright, take nutrients from the leaves to the roots and take water from the roots to the leaves - Leaves-take in water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide to make food (photosynthesis) - Flowers- make pollen and seeds for plant reproduction - Seeds- hold a baby plant - Fruit- Protects the seeds - Plants must have sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to perform photosynthesis - Germinate- when soil warms and a plant begins to grow from a seed, this is called germination *Some plants are carnivorous (eat insects/animals) like pitcher plants and venus fly traps. The reason they do this because they are not getting their needs met in their environment (mostly not getting enough nitrogen) 2 How Plants respond to their environment How plants respond to light ○ Plants will grow towards a light source ○ Stems grow up towards the sunlight ○ Roots grow down towards gravity - How Plants respond to Temperature - when temperatures warm the soil enough seeds will begin to germinate(grow) - When temperatures cool off many trees will drop their leaves to conserve Energy And use less water This is called Dormancy - Some plants won’t release their seeds unless the temperature is really high (like a pine cone releasing it’s seeds after a forest fire) REMEMBER, only some plants do this NOT ALL plants - When temperatures warm in the spring time many plants will produce leaf buds, so that new leaves will begin to grow - Hardy plants with waxy leaves will be better prepared to survive a frost or freezing temperatures - How Plants respond to gravity - Stems respond to gravity by growing against the force of gravity up towards the sunlight - Roots respond to gravity by growing with the force of gravity down into the soil 3 – What parts of plants do we eat? - We eat the leaves of plants (like lettuce, basil, parsley, cilantro, etc) - We eat the stems of plants (like celery, asparagus, kohlrabi, rhubarb and turmeric) - We eat the roots of plants (like carrots, potatoes, onions) - We eat the flowers of plants (like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage) - We eat the fruits of plants (like oranges, apples, tomatoes) - We eat the seeds of plants (corn, beans, rice, peanuts,cashews) - What is pollination and what happens during pollination? - Flowers use pollen to reproduce (make new plants by producing fruit that carries seeds) - Pollination can happen in several ways. (1) wind can carry pollen from one flower to the other (2) Animals can carry pollen from one plant to another. -Bees are the number 1 pollinator in the world and the only animal that actively collects pollen. They even have a special pouch to collect pollen. - What is Seed Dispersal? - Seed dispersal is the movement of seeds from one place to another - Seeds can be dispersed in 3 ways - They can be carried by Animals and dropped, carried on fur, or deposited when an animal uses the bathroom - They can be carried by water from one place to another -They can be carried by wind from one place to another 4
