Personality disorders are the group of mental health conditions that involve long-lasting, disruptive patterns of thinking, behavior, mood and relating to others. In general personality disorder are pervasive , enduring patterns of thinking, perceiving, relating the cause Importance of Mental Health Personality Disorder Personality disorder should be addressed in health awareness for individuals to understand the disorder and identify characteristic, causes that distorted perception, the abnormal behaviors , relationship and functioning. Thus, it help people to understand the management of the disorder which includes the goals psychotherapy for treating the personality disorder, Including: Reducing immediate distress, such as anxiety and depression. Helping the person understand that problems are internal and not caused by other people or situations Decreasing unhealthy and socially undesirable behavior Modifying the personality traits that are causing difficulties Overview of Personality Disorder a personality disorder is categorized into three clusters Cluster B- personality disorder Cluster A- personality which involved dramatic and erratic Cluster C- personality disorder that appears to be odd behaviors. It is an intrinsic type of disorder which is provided by and eccentric. It mean an instability and hypersensitivity in interpersonal relationships, instability and hypersensitivity, instability in self- image, extreme mood fluctuations, and impulsivity. Causes & Risk factors of borderline personality disorder Causes Risk Factors Genetics- family Hereditary predisposition- runs inheritance in the family and common highly associated with the genetic Changes in the brain- factors such as sensitivity, psychological factors impulsive and emotional dysregulation Stressful childhood- develops as a result of early abandonment which results in an unstable view of early abandonment. Period of stress-related paranoia and loss of contact with reality Manifests ideas of Impulsive and risky behavior, such as gambling, dangerous driving, reference unsafe sex, spending sprees, binge eating, drug miss-use, or sabotaging success by suddenly quitting a good job Impulsive (suicide self- Threats of suicide or self-injury, often in response to separation or mutilation) rejection. Wide mood swings that last from a few hours to a few days. Engages in splitting Ongoing feelings of emptiness. (adoring then devaluing Inappropriate, strong anger, such as losing your temper often persons) Treatment Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder Treating BPD usually involves a combination of psychotherapy, medication, and support from family and friends. Psychotherapy 1. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) 2. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) 3. Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) 4. Schema-Focused Therapy Medication- no specific treatment but certain medications can be prescribed to help alleviate symptoms. Eg: antidepressants, mood stabilizers, or antipsychotic medications. Education and awareness Holistic Approach Nutrition and dietary change Lifestyle adjustment Medication and mind-body exercise Promote health and healing through spirituality Physical activity. Ephesians 4:22-24 “To put your old self, which belong to former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desire, and to be renewed in the spirit of the mind, and to put on the new self, through likeness of God in righteousness” Recommendation 1) Education and awareness: Educate community by rolling out health education campaign on personality disorder and involving the community for them to understand the negative effect mantle health can have on individuals. 2) Policy advocacy on personality disorder: Advocate for good policy that priorities on mental health in the (3) three level of government which is the local level, provincial and national level so good support in terms of financial and law. 3) Accessible service: The service must be accessible to people. 4) Support Network: Encourage good social support network for the patient to help patient feel less isolated. Conculsion Personality disorder is one of difficult and complex disorder in mental health condition that can affect people of different age group and can cause significant effect on the overall wellbeing of an individual’s life Its negative unique blend of characteristic- including attitudes, thoughts and behaviors as well as how we express these negative characteristics in our interactions with others and with world around us. By speaking out about the stigma associated with personality disorders and fostering an environment of understanding and support, this can significantly help improve the quality of life for individuals who suffer silently around us.
