## 25. GRAMMAR (a) The Perfect Tense: Verbs conjugated with être The following verbs are exceptional and form their Perfect tense with être: | VERB | PERFECT TENSE | | ---------------- | ----------------- | | aller, to go | je suis allé(e) | | venir, to come | je suis venu(e) | | revenir, to come back | je suis revenu(e) | | arriver, to arrive | je suis arrivé(e) | | partir, to depart | je suis parti(e) | | sortir, to go (or come) out | je suis sorti(e) | | entrer, to enter | je suis entré(e) | | rentrer, to go (or come) home | je suis rentré(e) | | rester, to stay | je suis resté(e) | | descendre, to descend | je suis descendu(e) | | monter, to go up | je suis monté(e) | | tomber, to fall | je suis tombé(e) | Example: The Perfect tense of arriver, to arrive: | | | | ------------------------ | ------------------------- | | je suis arrivé(e) | nous sommes arrivé(e)s | | tu es arrivé(e) | vous êtes arrivé(e)(s) | | il est arrivé | ils sont arrivés | | elle est arrivée | elles sont arrivées | NEGATIVE: je ne suis pas arrivé(e), etc. INTERROGATIVE: suis-je arrivé(e)? etc. INTERROG. NEG.: ne suis-je pas arrivé(e)? etc. Notice that with these few "être" verbs the Past Participle plays the part of an adjective and agrees with the Subject (e.g. elle est arrivée). But let us remind you that in the normal Perfect tense formed with "avoir", the Past Participle never agrees with the Subject, it agrees only with a preceding Direct Object (e.g. "Je les ai vus").
