MAPEH 8 BASKETB LL BASKETBALL Basketball is a game WHAT IS played between two teams of five players each on a rectangular court, BASKETBALL? usually indoors. Each team tries to score by tossing the ball through the opponent’s goal, an elevated horizontal hoop and net called a basket. BASKETBALL BASKETBALL Basketball came to existence through the ingenuity of Dr. James Naismith. It was first played in 1891 at Springfield, Massachusetts, YMCA. The first ball used was a soccer football, because of its ability to bounce uniformly. The first baskets were peach baskets. BASKETBALL BASKETBALL The first team had nine players, three forwards, three centers, and three guards. Later it become optional to reduce five, and finally, five was selected as the best number. Basketball was first used in Olympic Games in 1936 in Berlin where the United States toyed with all oppositions. BASKETBALL OBJECTIVE Basketball is played by 2 teams of 5 players each. The aim of each team is to score in the opponents’ basket and to prevent the other team from scoring. BASKETBALL COURT According to FIBA (International Basketball Federation) guidelines, a basketball court is a rectangular playing area 28m in length and 15m in width. International competitions uincluding Olympics follow FIBA guidelines. The boarder markings along the length of the court are called sidelines and the breadth of the court are called endlines or baselines. Basketball baseline Basketball sideline The outer edge of the key parallel to the endline is called the free-throw line. There’s a 3.6m diameter semi-circle drawn on the outer part of the free throw line called the free- throw circle. If/when no ice available tie shoe strings tighter. Do not remove shoe. Serious sprains require x-rays. BASKETBALL INJURIES & BLEEDING: Cuts especially around the eyebrows FIRST-AID First aid: Using gloves apply a sterile gauze pads apply direct pressure and elevation. BASKETBALL DISLOCATION: Fingers, INJURIES & Shoulder FIRST-AID First aid: Immobilize and transport. Do Not try to relieve dislocation. BASKETBALL HEAT EXHAUSTION INJURIES & (excessive sweating) FIRST-AID First aid: Cool down and give water. Do not put back into game. Heat exhaustion can progress into life threatening heat stroke. BASKETBALL MUSCLE CRAMPS INJURIES & First aid: Apply direct pressure. FIRST-AID Once relieve massage or knead. Adnominal cramps are serious seek medical assistance immediately. INJURY PREVENTION BASKETBALL INJURY WARM UP PROTECTION PREVENTION REST TRAINING NUTRITION & HYDRATION BASKETBALL COURT BASKETBALL EQUIPMENT Ball Shoes Blackboard Uniform BASKETBALL BASKETBALL Each team can have a maximum of 5 players RULES on the court at any one time. Substitution can be made as many times as they wish within the game. Once a player puts two RULES hands on the ball (not including catching the ball) they cannot the dribble or move with move and the ball must be passed or shot. BASKETBALL After the ball goes into a BASKETBALL team’s half and they win possession back the ball must then make it back RULES over the half way line within 10 secs. If the ball fails to do so then a foul will be called and the ball will be turned over. BASKETBALL Each team has 24 secs to BASKETBALL at least shot at the basket. A shot constitutes either going in the basket RULES or hitting the rim of the basket. If after the shot is taken and the ball fails to go in the basket then the shot clock is restarted for another 24 secs. BASKETBALL The team trying to score a basket is called the BASKETBALL offence whilst the team trying to prevent them from scoring is called the RULES defense. The defense must do all they can to stop the offence from scoring by either blocking a shot or preventing a shot from being fired. BASKETBALL BASKETBALL After each successful basket the ball is then RULES turned over to the opposition.
