Overview of the course: Intermediate basketball is the continuation of the of the beginner basketball in the university year level program in physical education course. It deals with the advanced theories and skills in basketball that are relevant to the development of overall fitness and wellness of the individual. It focus on the engagement of the students to organized basketball program and awareness of playing basketball under the new normal. History of the game: Basketball started in 1891 at Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Training School through the persistent effort of Dr. James Naismith at Springfield City Massachusetts, United States of America. During wintertime in early 1891, people are having difficulty to find activities that will make them physically active. It was Dr. Naismith who comes up with an idea of creating an indoor game to address the problem of freezing outside while playing baseball; baseball was then a popular indoor game at that time. Thus, the birth of basketball started with the enthusiasm of Dr. Naismith to come-up with an alternative game suited to play indoors. As a starter, Dr. Naismith hang a peach basket a both end of the floor about 10 foot high (3.05m) elevated track and use a soccer ball. Then he created 13 rules of the game, which served as the guide in coming up with a more comprehensive and improved basketball rules. At present, basketball is one of the much-awaited sports in Olympics and other major competition all over the world. The world championship games, which is being held every four years in one the major competitions in basketball. teams from different continents compete and the top 3 teams will advance to Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department the world championship games. The top favorite USA basketball team retains its crown in the last 2020 Tokyo Olympics beating France for the gold medal match. Rules of the Game Review in understanding the rules of the game. To enjoy playing basketball, one must understand the fundamental rules of playing basketball. Understanding the rules of the game makes it easy for individuals to play the game without hesitation. A. The ball is made of leather, synthetic leather, rubber or synthetic rubber material of orange color with eight (8) traditionally –shaped panels and black seams. E. Its maximum circumference shall not less than 74.9 centimeter and not more than 78 centimeter (size 7). F. It shall not weigh less than 567 grams or more than 650 grams. G. The ball shall be inflated to an air pressure and should bounce of approximately 1.80-meter height when it drops into the playing surface. Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department Fouls and Violation in Basketball (Updated as per FIBA 2020 Rule Book, Effective as of June 2021) Teams Refers to any players included in the official lists and roosters of the team. It must wear the same uniforms and any other add on uniform such as headbands, sleeves and other gears must be uniformed in colors and specifications Head coach and assistant coaches Head coach and assistant coaches must submit and confirm the line-up 40 minutes before the game schedule begins. Lists of coach and assistant coaches, and a corresponding number of team members playing must be checked and submitted 10 minutes before the game schedule begins. Rules and Interpretations A. Playing time, tied scores and overtime Statement: A game shall not begin unless each team has a minimum of 5 players on the playing court ready to play. Statement: The game shall begin with a jump ball at the centre circle. Statement: An interval of play begins: 20 minutes before the game is scheduled to begin. When the game clock signal sounds for the end of the quarter or overtime. In the case of an Instant Replay System (IRS) review, at the end of a quarter or overtime only after the referee communicates the final decision. B. Player out of bounds and ball out of bounds Statement: If the ball is out of bounds because of touching or being touched by a player who is on or outside the boundary line, this player causes the ball to go out of bounds. C. Goal: When made and its value Statement: The value of a field goal is defined by the place on the playing court where the shot was released from. A field goal released from the 2-point field goal area counts 2 points, a field goal released from the 3-point field goal area counts 3 points. A field goal is credited to the team attacking the opponents’ basket into which the ball entered. Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department Fouls Statement: A personal foul is a player’s illegal contact with an opponent. The player causing the illegal contact with the opponent’s shall be penalised accordingly. 1. Double Foul Statement: A foul may be personal, unsportsmanlike, disqualifying or technical. To be considered as a double foul, both fouls must be player’s fouls and must be in the same category, either both are personal fouls or both are any combination of unsportsmanlike and disqualifying fouls. The double foul must involve physical contact, therefore technical fouls are not apart of a double foul as they are non-contact fouls. If both fouls, occurred at approximately the same time, are not of the same category (personal or unsportsmanlike/disqualifying), it is not a double foul. The penalties shall not cancel each other. The personal foul shall always be considered as having occurred first and the unsportsmanlike/disqualifying fouls as having occurred second. 2. Technical Foul Statement: An official warning is given to a player for an action or behaviour which, if repeated, may lead to a technical foul. That warning shall also be communicated to the head coach of that team and shall apply to any member of that team for any similar actions for the remainder of the game. An official warning shall be given only when the ball becomes dead and the game clock is stopped. 3. Unsportsmanlike Foul A personal foul committed by a player which in the judgment of the official is not legitimate attempt to directly play the ball within the spirit and intent of the rules. Disqualifying Foul Is any flagrant unsportsmanlike behavior by a player, substitute, coach, assistant coach, any member of the coaching staff or team follower (Art. 47.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). 5. Blocking Is illegal personal contact which impedes a player the progress of a player with or without the ball. 6. Charging Foul- with the ball or without the ball. Personal contact with or without the ball when a player pushes or moves into an opposing player torso. 7. Holding Interference with players/s movement during the game. Pushing Is an act of forcibly moving the opponent who has or does have control of the ball. All fouls falls in under rule number 7 from article 42.1 to 44.1.8 of FIBA Rule Book for coaches and referees. 9. Illegal use of hands Occurs when the defensive player remains in contact with the opposing player with or without the ball to impede the progress. Violations An act of infraction or violating the rules of the game. 1. Double Dribble – Is the illegal dribbling of the ball when players lose control of the ball and when player loses the control of the ball and then regains control of a live ball in the court. It is also known as “fumbling” the ball. (Art. 34.1.2 FIBA Rule Book). 2. Travelling Is an illegal movement of one or both feet beyond the limits outlined in any direction while holding a live ball on the court. (Art. 35.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). 3. Three Seconds Violation If a player remains or stay in the opponent’s restricted area for three (3) consecutive seconds while his team in his control of the ball on the court and the game clock is running. (Art. 36.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department 4. 8 Seconds Violation If a player/s fails to control a live ball in his backcourt within eight (8) seconds. (Art. 38.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). 5. 24-Seconds Violation If a player/s fails to control a live ball on the court and failed to attempt or shoot the ball within the time frame of 24-seconds shot clock. (Art. 39.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). 6. Ball Return to Backcourt When a player of the team in control of the ball touch the ball in his front court and then a player of that same team is the first to touch the ball. (Art. 40.1.1 FIBA Rule Book). 7. Goal Tending When a player touches the ball when it’s downward flight and the ball is completely above the level of the ring. (Art. 41.2.1 FIBA Rule Book). 8. Interference with the Ball When a player touches the basket or the backboard with the ball is in contact with the ring. (Art. 41.2.2 FIBA Rule Book). Advanced Skills in Basketball Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department A. Dribbling Controlling the ball using the palm and fingers of the hand. It is commonly controlled with continuous and consistent tapping or pushing of the ball using the palm and finger facing downward while striking the ball off the floor or playing surface - Defensor, 2015. Dribbling and ball fake B. Passing A method of continuously moving the ball between players using different techniques to avoid the defense. Types of Passing A. Chest Pass – a type of pass wherein the ball is resting on both hands at chest level. Ball should be gripped by the fingers and should rest on the palm of the hands. Specifically, it targets the chest or body of the receiver to make sure the ball travels accurately. It is a pass commonly used in short distances.(Defensor, 2012) B. Bounce Pass – a pass done by bouncing the ball on the floor towards the receiver. Ball should be handled firm and tight with fingers spread on the ball and rest on the palm. (Defensor, 2012) C. Overhead Pass – a two handed pass wherein the ball is placed on top of the head of the passer. Can dribble and pass the ball with the correct stance and hit the right target. Can dribble and pass the ball with proper coordination of eye and total body movement. Can finish the dribbling and passing skill test on the prescribed time allotted. Display a high level of fitness during the performance. C. Shooting An act of putting the ball inside the goal or rim. It is accompanied by proper coordination of hands, feet and body position, correct handling of the ball and follow-through when taking the shots. (Defensor, 2012) Types of Shot in Basketball A. Set Shot – it is a shot done with feet flat on the ground and commonly used in free throw and if there is a pick and roll movement of two players.(Defensor, 2012) B. Lay-up Shot – lay-up is a shot that requires a combination of dribbling, jumping and proper take off of the feet while stretching the arms and the hand using the board.(Defensor, 2012) Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department C. Jump Shot – is a shot accompanied by jumping the feet off the ground. Same procedure as in set shot with regards to the proper handling and grip of the ball (preferably T-position grip). Rebounding, Defensive and Offensive Patterns Rebounding is a defensive and offensive positioning technique of player/s to gain advantage in getting the ball from a missed shot. Back-out is the most common term applied to gain correct positioning in getting the ball accurately. Defensive Patterns Are defensive coaching designs applied in a game situation to stop or limit the offensive team scoring points. Common advanced defensive designs are the following: A. 1-2-2 Defensive Pattern or Shooter’s Defense B. 2-3 Defensive Pattern or Zone Defense C. Full court Defense Offensive Patterns Are a set of offensive designs to score points using the team synchronized movement. Common advanced offensive designs are the following: A. 1-2-2 Shooter’s Offensive Drill B. 2-3 Zone Offense - Balance Attack C. Open Court Basketball Criteria: Prince Sultan University Health and Physical Education Department All shooting and rebounding drills will be demonstrated by the instructor and must follow standardized criteria that are aligned with the rubrics during the assessment. Skill Test #2 - Shooting and Rebounding Name ID #: Criteria 5 4 3 2 1 Score Can shoot and rebound the ball consistently. Can shoot and rebound the ball with the correct stance. Can shoot and rebound the ball with proper coordination of eye and total body movement. Can finish the shooting and rebounding on the prescribed time allotted.
