1 9 5 0 ’ S S P O R T S By: Connor w, Mason A, Ben n, Cole g, Noah w 07 Global Event In the late fifty’s Fidel Castro would lead a regime to overthrow the Cuban Director Fulgencio Batista and take power. Once Castro took power of Cuba he turned the country into a communist party. He was their Prime Minsiter and Commander and Chief Castro also developed relations with the Soviet Union at the time this would eventually lead to the CUBAN MISSILE Crisis which would play a significant role in the Cold War 3 Korean War Draft In the early 50’s their was an active draft for men to serve in the Korean War Male college students could finish their academic year before choosing a branch of military to join or enter themselves into the draft. Some males in the south who were drafted were to dumb to serve in the military 07 Local Event Hempfield board of directors and other directors from other s such as mountville and east Pete decide to combine districts into one This all took place during April of 1954 This jointrue took place after disagreements and bashing of other directors, however they came to a consensece to join districts Broadcasting Sports - New Audience: TV brought sports to millions of new fans, especially in baseball, where announcers became iconic voices. - Popular TV Sports: Compact sports like wrestling, boxing, and roller derby thrived due to ease of coverage and fan engagement. - Initial Challenges: Early broadcasts lacked replays, close- ups, and reliable technology but improved throughout the decade. - Baseball & Football Growth: Radio remained dominant for baseball, but by 1958, 800 major league games were televised. He only played in one losing game his entire career in the university of San Francisco with him the Boston Celtics’s won eleven championships Russell pioneered advances in rebounds and defense in 1966 russel became the head coach of the Celtics while still playing, he was the first black head coach since WW2 Rocky Marciano Rocco “Rocky” Marciano was a 7 time heavy weight boxing champion and retired with out any losses during his career. Rocky became extremely popular when he beat Joe Walcott to claim the heavy weight title and claimed his title of the king of boxing. Over the next few years of Rocky’s career he would try and defend his heavy weight title. In his final fight he knocked out Archie Moore in the 9th round to defend his heavy weight title. After retiring he became the first boxer in history to retire with an undefeated record. Rocky was not known for his speed, strength or his power but fans recognized him for his grit. In 1969 Rocco Marciano was killed in a plane crash Mickey Mantle Mickey Mantle was an American baseball player that played for the new York Yankees. The Yankees outfielder was a very powerful hitter and combined his speed with his switch hitting power. People believed that in the 1956 and the 1957 seasons Mantle was the best baseball player in the league. Baseball researchers believed that Mickey had the best back to back season in baseball history. In 1956 Mantle won the triple crown batting in 130 RBIs, a.353 batting average and 52 home runs. In the next season mickey spent his first few months of the season in the hospital with shin splints but still managed to end the season with 94 RBIs, 34 home runs and a.365 batting average. Amidst all of his stats Mickey Mantle was known best for his leadership and dependability. Willie Mays Willie Mays was an American baseball player that played for the New York Giants where he played center field. The Giants were one of the few teams that were desegregatating at the time. In his first of only 27 at bats Willie mays hit a home run that traveled 600 feet, 7 out of his first ten at bats were home runs. May’s career was put on hold when he joined the army and without him in 1952 the giants. Fell to second and then fell to 5th in the 1953. In 1954 when Mays returns the Giants win the Pennant. During the 1954 World Series Willie made a crucial play in game one that helped the Giants to secure the first win. The Giants went on to win the 1954 World Series. Mays was the first player to hit 30 home runs and steal 30 bases in the same season. In his career he hit 660 homeruns. Mays became the first black captain on a Major League Baseball team and in 1953 became the highest payed player in the league.
