OB/GYN & Emer EMERGENCIES Pelvic-inflammatory disease Disease-causing organisms enter through the vagina during sexual activity and travel up to the cervix and into the uterine cavity. Here, they may expand into the fallopian tubes and cause scarring that can cause ectopic pregnancies or sterility. It can also lead to life-threatening abscess in the ovaries. The most common sign is generalized lower abdominal pain. Other signs and symptoms may be abnormal, foul-smelling discharge, increased pain during sex, fever, general malaise, nausea, and vomiting. Bacterial vaginosis: ⁃ 15yrs-44years ⁃ Normal bacteria in the vagina are replaced by an overgrowth of other bacterial forms. Symptoms may include itching, burning, pain, and may be accompanied by fishy foul-smelling discharge. Pregnant women with this may have premature babies or babies born with low birth weight. Gonorrhea: ⁃ A bacteria that multiples in warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes and in the urethra. It can also grow in the mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. ⁃ Symptoms appear 2-10 days after exposure. ⁃ Symptoms may appear with painful urination, associated burning/itching, yellow/bloody discharge with foul-odor. More severe symptoms may be associated with abdominal pain as well. Chlamydia: ⁃ People with chlamydia often report lower abdominal pain, low back pain, nausea, fever, pain during sex, bleeding between menstrual periods. This infection can even spread to the rectum to cause rectal bleeding, pain, or discharge.
