Osteology II: Clavicle and related Joints Department of Clinical Anatomy School of Laboratory Medicine & Medical Sciences College of Health Sciences University of KwaZulu-Natal Adapted from J. Naidoo (2020) UKZN INSPIRING GREATNESS Clavicle Known as the ‘collarbone’ Bony attachment between trunk and upper limb Spongy bone, shell of compact bone S-shaped contour SHAFT – double curved Medial Half – Convex anteriorly Lateral Half – Concave anteriorly Subclavian groove – attachment of Subclavius muscle Impression for costoclavicular ligament FUNCTION ❑ Serves as moveable support from which the upper limb and scapula are suspended ❑ Forms a bony boundary for the cervico-axillary canal – protecting neurovascular bundles ❑ Transmits shock from upper limb to axial skeleton Clavicle - Ends STERNAL END: Medial Quadrangular Large facet Articulates with manubrium of sternum Forms Sternoclavicular Joint ACROMIAL END: Lateral Flat Small oval facet Articulates with acromion of scapula Forms Acromioclavicular Joint Clavicle - Surfaces SUPERIOR SURFACE: Smooth Deep to skin and platysma INFERIOR SURFACE: Rough Distinct Tuberosity: near acromial end Conoid Tubercle – attachment of conoid ligament (medial part of coracoclavicular ligament) Trapezoid Line – attachment of trapezoid ligament (lateral part of coracoclavicular ligament) Clavicle – Bony Landmarks Clavicle – Muscle Attachments Medial Two Thirds: Sternoclediomastoid Subclavius Pectoralis Major Lateral Third: Trapezius Deltoid Clavicle – Attachments Clavicle - Joints Sternoclavicular and Acromioclavicular Joints link the two bones of the pectoral girdle to each other and to the trunk Clavicle - Joints Sternoclavicular Joint Synovial joint, Saddle shaped Between proximal head of clavicle and clavicular notch on the manubrium Movement: anteroposterior and vertical planes, some degree of rotation Surrounded by articular capsule and four ligaments LIGAMENTS: 1 & 2: Anterior and Posterior Sternoclavicular Ligaments Anterior and Posterior to the joint 3: Interclavicular Ligament Links ends of two clavicles, and superior surface of manubrium 4: Costoclavicular Ligament Links proximal end of clavicle with first rib and costal cartilage Clavicle - Joints Acromioclavicular Joint Synovial joint Between medial surface of acromion and acromial end of clavicle Movement: anteroposterior and vertical planes, axial rotation Surrounded by joint capsule and reinforced by ligaments LIGAMENTS: 1: Acromioclavicular Ligament Small, superior to the joint, passes between adjacent regions of acromion and clavicle 2: Coracoclavicular Ligament Large, accessory ligament, provides weight-bearing support for upper limb and clavicle, divided into: Trapezoid Ligament – Anteriorly Conoid Ligament – Posteriorly
