Various OM Topics YIN VS YANG: Yang Characteristics: Birth, light, daytime, warmth, exterior, superior, posterior, activity/movement, heaven, qi/energy, and excess Yin Characteristics: Death, darkness, night, coolness, interior, inferior, anterior, stillness, earth, blood/fluid, and deficiency Yin and Yang relationships: 1. Opposition-i.e. Fire is yang and Water is yin. Yin and yang oppose one another and create balance. Deficient yang leads to excess yin such as dampness. 2. Inter-dependence-Yin and yang cannot exist without the other. i.e. Without the structure provided by yin, there would be nowhere for yang to operate. The qi is yang in nature but it needs an organ such as the spleen to physically act out the commands of purpose. 3. Mutual-Consuming-i.e. Excess heat(yang) consumes the body fluids(yin) and leads to dryness. 4. Intertransformation: Yin and yang change into one another. i.e. Day turns into night 5. Infinite Divisibility: Any entity can be further divided into yin/yang divisions. i.e. Earth is yin compared to the sun. But the oceans are yin and the land is yang. On the land, deserts are yang and tundras are yin. In the desert, the air is yang, but cacti are yin….yada, yada, yada. VITAL SUBSTANCES: 1. Jing-associated with kidney 2. Qi-associated with lung 3. Blood-associated with liver 4. Body Fluids-associated with spleen 5. Shen-associated with heart THREE TREASURES 1. Shen 2. Qi 3. Jing QI Qi is the commander of blood; Blood is the mother of qi Qi is said to upbear, downbear, enter, and exit Functions of qi: Transporting, warming, protection/defense, holding/containing, transforming, nourishing, and rising. Types of qi: -Qing qi=qi of air -Gu qi-food qi extracted from spleen and stomach; gu qi sent up to lung to be combined with Qing qi -Zong qi(Ancestral, Gathering, Pectoral qi)-Combination of Gu qi and Qing qi; Stored in chest; Promotes lungs’ functions of controlling respiration and voice and heart’s functions of regulating heartbeat, blood, and vessels -Yuan Qi (Original qi)-Derived from kidney (preheaven) essence; stored in kidney; supplemented by food (post-heaven) essence; circulated through body via San Jiao -Wei Qi (Defensive qi)-Protects against pathogens; Controls opening and closing of pores; Circulates outside the vessels and channels in the skin and flesh; regulates body temperature -Ying Qi (Constructive/Nutritive Qi)-Flows in channels and vessels with the blood; nourishes the blood; said to be functional aspect of blood AFFECT OF THE SEVEN EMOTIONS ON QI: 1. Anger-Makes qi rise; for example, creates headache; injures liver 2. Fear-Makes qi descend; for example, creates urinary incontinence; injures kidney 3. Joy-slows qi down; for example, impairing circulation; injures heart 4. Worry/Pensiveness/Overthinking-Knots, binds, or stagnates the qi; for example, leads to bloating and distention; injures spleen 5. Grief/sadness/sorrow- Dissolves or consumes the qi; for example, creates shortness of breath; injures lung 6. Shock/Fright-Scatters the qi; for example, creates insomnia and panic attacks; injures kidney and heart JIN FLUIDS VS YE LIQUIDS: 1. Jin Fluids: Yang in nature, clear, light, thin, watery i.e. sweat, tears, saliva, mucus 2. Ye Liquids: Yin in nature, turbid, heavy, dense i.e. Synovial fluid, cerebral spinal fluid, bone marrow, inner humors of eyeball CAUSES OF DISEASE: 1. Internal Causes: Emotions such as anger, joy, pensiveness, worry, sadness, fear, shock 2. External Causes: Basically exposure to weather and environment elements such as wind, cold, fire, summer-heat, dampness, and dryness 3. Miscellaneous Causes: Everything else such as Constitution, Taxation, Excessive sexual activity, improper diet, overindulgence, injury, parasites, bad treatment SIX EXTRAORDINARY ORGANS: 1. Uterus 2. Brain 3. Marrow: contributes to making blood and nourishes the brain 4. Bones 5. Blood Vessels 6. Gallbladder: Affects capacity to make decisions and gives courage to act on them ORGAN FUNCTIONS: Zang Organs-yin organs, solid organs, store substances 1. Liver: Maintains free flow of qi, blood, and fluids; Liver qi moves in all directions, but especially upward; Stores the blood 2. Heart: Circulates blood; governs blood and vessels 3. Spleen: Transformation and Transportation; Helps contain blood in vessels 4. Lung: Governs qi (particularly wei qi), skin, and body hair; Dominates respiration; Controls Dispersing and Descending; Regulates water passages; Directs qi and fluids downward 5. Kidney: Stores essence and engenders marrow; Governs water and bones; aids in grasping the qi from lungs 6. Pericardium: Protects the heart Fu Organs-yang organs, hollow organs, transmit but do not store substances 1. Gallbladder: Controls secretion of bile; Controls Judgment; Provides courage in decision making 2. Small Intestine: Separates pure from the turbid 3. San Jiao: Conduit for original qi (yuan qi) throughout the body 4. Stomach: Controls Rotting and Ripening of food; Makes qi descend; Origin of Fluids 5. Large Intestine: Conduction and Conveyance 6. Urinary Bladder: Stores and Excretes Urine SPIRIT OF THE ORGANS: 1. Liver-Houses the Hun or Ethereal Soul -Responsible for “coming and going of shen”; planning(liver is general of body); making goals 2. Heart-Houses the Shen -Responsible for consciousness, thinking, memory, affections 3. Spleen-Houses the Yi -Responsible for thinking, memory, concentration 4. Lung-Houses the Po or Corporeal Soul -Responsible for physical feelings and sensations 5. Kidney-Houses the Zhi -Responsible for willpower and determination PARTS OF THE EYE Sclera=Lung Upper Eyelid=Spleen Lower Eyelid=Stomach Corners=Heart Iris=Liver Pupil=Kidney
