After two years of house arrest in Caesarea, Paul was finally sent to Rome to stand trial before the emperor. Under the supervision of a centurion named Julius, Paul and the other passengers endured a perilous journey at sea, ultimately being shipwrecked on the Island of Malta. Dave explores ancient Malta and investigates Luke’s account of the shipwreck, the Maltese people, and Paul’s ministry on the island. After three-months, Julius arranged for another ship to finally get Paul to Italy. Acts 27 from caesarea maritima to sidon to visit friends and detour thru cyprus due to poor weather before landing at the port of Myra at myra julius arranged for paul n his party to italy in a grain freighter grain freighter is a large commercial vessel the vessel carried passengers and good from italy to egypt, carry passengers & grains from egypt to italy the journey typically takes 2 wks however due to bad weather across the medterraean sea and is not for unexperienced captain the vessel makes sluggish progress from myra to rome it was after the day of atonement, likely in october from myra to cnidus to fair havens Paul warned the centurion of the danger but the latter instead of listening to what paul said allowed the advice of the captain of the ship since the harbour was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that they should sail on hoping to reach phoenix and winter there Acts 27:7-12 - there was a harbour in crete Paul has a student named titus to lead a church there, paul wrote a letter to titus and warned him abt the ppl on the island of crete Titus 3:3-5 The storm north easter Acts 27:13-17, they could do anything but allow the wind to take them to whereever it leads to passengers throw goods into the sea to lighten the vessel Acts 27:20 for 2 wks they were adrift, they took sounding to check water was 120ft deep, awhile later they took sounding to chk water was 90 ft deep, afraid to crash against the rocks, they dropped 4 anchors Paul urged the centurions and soldiers to eat as they had not taken any food the past 14 days Paul said "now I urged you to take some food, u need it to survive, not 1 of u will lose a single hair from his head". After he took some bread and gave thanks to God The ship struck a sand bar (Acts 27:27-41) According to Luke's account, the roman soldiers wanted to kill the prisoners so they couldn’t escape in all the chaos. Julius wanted to spare Paul's life said no Julius ordered everyone to jump overboard, all 276 ppl jumped onboard. Paul's promise of everyone escaping came true, they all 1 by 1 were washed to shore on the island of Malta Malta is 58 miles south of italy. Malta is 17 miles long n 9 miles wide, the largest of the 3 islands (Comino & Gozo) in the archipelago group of islands Mdina phoenicians live on the island in 8th century BC, they named the island Maleth (means shelter or refuge) 1964 blue volkswagen beetle , 40 horse power engine at the back, gas tank in the front trunk.
