Vihaan's winning photograph captures a spider in an intriguing position with a sculpture of Lord Krishna, nestled on the outskirts of his city. This prestigious competition, organized by the Natural History Museum, is often referred to as the 'Oscars of Photography' and serves as a global platform for showcasing the world's most exceptional wildlife photography.  Rohini Nayyar Prize: Deenanath Rajput had given this prize for recognising his efforts in changing the lives of over 6,000 tribal women in Chhattishgarh by establishing a farmer’s producer’s organisation (FPO). Engineer-turned-social worker Deenanath Rajput was awarded the Rohini Nayyar Prize for Outstanding Contribution to Rural Development. Rohini Nayyar Prize: 1. The prize comprises a cash award of ₹10 lakh, along with a trophy and a citation. 2. This award marks the second edition of the Rohini Nayyar Prize, which was established in honour of the distinguished economist Rohini Nayyar, who sadly passed away in 2021.  British Academy Book Prize 2023: India-Born Author Nandini Das Wins 2023 British Academy Book Prize. Nandini Das who is a Professor in the English faculty at the University of Oxford, won the award for her book ‘Courting India: England, Mughal India and the Origins of Empire.’ About British Academy Book Prize: 1. The British Academy Book Prize, formerly known as the Nayef Al-Rodhan Prize. 2. It celebrate the best works of non-fiction that demonstrate rigour and originality and have contributed to public understanding of other world cultures and their interaction. 3. It was established in 2013.  SKOCH National Award- 2023: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bags prestigious SKOCH National Award- 2023 for its innovative Rs 1 Crore accident relief Sarige Suraksha Insurance Scheme for its staff which is the first in the history of transport organizations in the country.  JCB Literary Prize 2023: Tamil writer Perumal Murugan wins 2023 JCB Literary Prize for his novel "Fire Bird." The award was announced virtually by Lord Bamford, Chairman of JCB Group, and awarded in person by Deepak Shetty, CEO and Managing Director, JCB India Limited.  Miss Universe 2023: Nicaragua's Sheynnis Palacios has been crowned Miss Universe for the year 2023, marking her country's first win at the international beauty pageant. The 72nd edition of the Miss Universe pageant was held at the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador. (See the location of Nicaragua Country in Maps).  Indira Gandhi Peace Prize: Recently, the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development 2022 was jointly awarded to the Indian Medical Association and the Trained Nurses Association of India as representatives of the COVID-19 warriors in the country. About Indira Gandhi Peace Prize: 1. The Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament, and Development was instituted in the memory of the former prime minister by a trust in her name in 1986. 2. It consists of a monetary award of 25 lakh rupees along with a citation. 3. Last Time Award: Prtaham NGO.  Booker Prize 2023: Irish author Paul Lynch’s “Prophet Song” was named the winner of the Booker Prize 2023, beating London-based Indian-origin author Chetna Maroo’s debut novel “Western Lane”. About Booker Prize: 1. The Booker Prize, formerly the Booker Prize for Fiction (1969–2001) and the Man Booker Prize (2002–2019), is a literary award conferred each year for the best novel written in the English language, which was published in the United Kingdom and Ireland. 2. When the prize was created, only novels written by Commonwealth, Irish, and South African (and later Zimbabwean) citizens were eligible to receive the prize; in 2014, eligibility was widened to any English-language novel. 3. A sister prize, the International Booker Prize, is awarded for a book translated into English and published in the United Kingdom or Ireland.  51st International Emmy Award: Indian comedian Vir Das has achieved a milestone by winning an International Emmy Award for his Netflix show, “Vir Das: Landing on Monday.” This accomplishment makes him the first Indian to secure a victory in the comedy category. Das shares the honor with the British series Derry Girls Season 3. Ekta Kapoor was honoured with Directorate Award for her ‘trailblazing career and impact on the Indian television landscape’. About International Emmy Awards: 1. The Emmy Awards stand as prestigious accolades for excellence in television and emerging media performances. 2. The term "Emmy" has no specific meaning; it serves as the name for the award. 3. Conceived in 1948, the inaugural Emmy Awards ceremony took place on January 25, 1949. Six awards were presented, including recognitions for the Most Outstanding Television Personality and Most Popular Television Program.  5th Edition of Changemaker of the Year award: Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was honored with the ‘Changemaker of the Year’ award. Governor Shaktikanta Das accepted it on behalf of the RBI. Anand Milk Union Limited (Amul), was crowned iconic changemaker of the year. It is given by The Hindu Business Group.  Grammy Awards2024: Falguni Shah, a Grammy Award-winning Indian vocalist and songwriter, has been nominated for the Best Global Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammy Awards for her song “Abundance in Millets”, which features a speech written and delivered by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.  1st edition of Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award: Renowned author Salman Rushdie received the 'Lifetime Disturbing the Peace Award' from the Vaclav Havel Center. Just last month, Rushdie announced the release of his new book, ‘Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder’.  ‘ClimateLaunchpad Asia-Pacific’ Competition: Pakistan-based cleantech startup She-Guard has been named the winner at the ‘ClimateLaunchpad Asia-Pacific’ finals with its innovative biodegradable and plastic-free sanitary product.  ‘Gansamragini Lata Mangeshkar Award’ for 2023: The Maharashtra government has chosen the esteemed playback singer and National Award winner, Suresh Ishwar Wadkar, as the recipient of the prestigious ‘Gansamragini Lata Mangeshkar Award’ for 2023. Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports Shri Anurag Singh Thakur along with MoS Information & Broadcasting, Dr. L. Murugan, and Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced the award at the inaugural function of 54th IFFI held at Panaji, Goa.  Uttar Pradesh, under the leadership of the Yogi Adityanath government, has secured a notable ‘Best State’ award for inland fisheries (plain areas). The state is set to receive this prestigious accolade at the two-day Global Fisheries Conference-2023 in Delhi.  Dhahan Prize: Mohali-based Deepti Babuta has become the first woman to bag the Dhahan Prize, the largest international literary award for fiction books in Punjabi language. Babuta received the award for her short story collection, ‘Bhukh Eon Sah Laindi Hai’ (‘Hunger Breathes Like This’). About Dhahan Prize: The Dhahan Prize was established by the Canada India Education Society (CIES) and the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2013 to give a platform to both aspiring and established writers to take their work to a broader, multilingual audience.  The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) recently unveiled its 11th edition of the BBC 100 Women list for 2023, featuring inspiring and influential women from various fields around the world. BBC 100 Women 2023 which includes four Indian women viz. Actress Dia Mirza, Cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur, Photographer Arati Kumar-Rao, and Tibetan Buddhist nun Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo.  2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award Global Laureate: Abdullahi Mire, a Somali refugee, has been named the 2023 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award Global Laureate for his work championing the right to education for displaced children. Mire, who grew up in the Dadaab refugee camps in Kenya, has put over 100,000 books in the hands of displaced children and youth in the country. About UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award Global Laureate: 1. The Nansen Award is conferred every year by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to an individual, group or organization in recognition of their contribution towards aiding refugees, stateless or displaced people. 2. It was created in 1954 in honour of the first United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Arctic explorer and humanitarian Fridtjof Nansen. 3. The first to receive this award is Eleanor Roosevelt. The International Film Festival of India (IFFI), founded in 1952 and held annually. 2. The 1st edition of IFFI was organized by the Films Division, Government of India, with the patronage of the first Prime Minister of India. Held in Mumbai from 24 January to 1 February 1952. 3. Since 2004, starting from the 35th edition, the International Film Festival of India, became globally competitive, and moved to its permanent venue Goa, and is being held during the months of November and December of each year. 4. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India through National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), jointly with the State Government of Goa through its Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG) organize the IFFI Awards. WHO acknowledges India’s success in declining TB incidence by 16 percent & TB mortality reduction by 18 percent in 2022 since 2015. It said that the treatment coverage has improved to 80 percent of the estimated TB cases, an increase of 19 percent over the previous year. India has the target to eradicate the TB from country by 2025.  World Energy Outlook 2023 Report: This report is published by Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA). It highlighted India’s commendable progress in the realm of energy efficiency building codes. India’s Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC), 2017, specifically for commercial buildings, stands out as a noteworthy achievement in the fight against climate change.  The State of Food and Agriculture 2023: A new report titled ‘The State of Food and Agriculture 2023’, by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) reveals the staggering hidden costs of unhealthy diets and ultra-processed foods, impacting both our health and the environment. India’s total hidden costs of agrifood systems have reached approximately $1.1 trillion, making it the third-largest contributor in the world, following China and the United States.  International Labour Organization (ILO) report on workers' Death: Nearly 30 lakh workers die every year globally due to work-related accidents and diseases. More than 63% of these deaths are reported from the Asia-Pacific region. About International Labour Organization (ILO): 1. The International Labour Organization (ILO) is a United Nations agency whose mandate is to advance social and economic justice by setting international labour standards. 2. Founded in October 1919 under the League of Nations (Under the treaty of Versailles), it is one of the first and oldest specialised agencies of the UN. 3. The ILO has 187 member states: 186 out of 193 UN member states plus the Cook Islands. 4. It is headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, with around 40 field offices around the world. 5. Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. 6. India is a founding member of the ILO and it has been a permanent member of the ILO Governing Body since 1922. 7. India has ratified six out of the eight-core/fundamental ILO conventions. India has not ratified the two core/fundamental conventions, namely Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organise Convention, 1948 (No. 87) and Right to Organise and Collective Bargaining Convention, 1949 (No. 98).  14th Emissions Gap Report 2023: Recently United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released 14th Emissions Gap Report 2023. It says that with the most optimistic climate action projects, there is only a 14% chance of achieving this target.  Knight Frank's Prime Global Cities Index, in its latest report, reveals that for the quarter ending in September 2023, Mumbai has achieved the fourth-highest year-on-year growth in prime residential prices among global cities.  UNDP's The 2024 Asia-Pacific Human Development Report: India has emerged among top countries with high income and wealth inequality but the share of the population living in multidimensional poverty fell from 25 to 15 per cent between 2015-16 and 2019-21. The most vulnerable section are those working in the informal sector, particularly women. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global higher education think-tank renowned for compiling university rankings, revealed the QS Asia University Rankings. 1. India proudly boasts the highest number of universities featured in the QS Asia University Rankings 2024, with a total of 148. 2. This marks a substantial increase of 37 from the previous year. IIT Bombay grabbed the top spot in India with the 40th position followed by IIT-Delhi at the 46th position and IIT-Madras at the 53rd position. 3. With 148 universities in the ranking list, India also becomes the country in Asia with the highest number of universities being featured surpassing China with 133 and Japan with 96 universities. 4. Peking University of China retained its top rank in Asia for the second consecutive year, while the University of Hong Kong ascended to second place, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) claimed the third spot.  State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2022-2023: The State Food Safety Index (SFSI) 2022- 2023 released by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) sheds light on the performance of Indian states in ensuring food safety. The 2022- 2023 index introduced a new parameter, 'Improvement in SFSI Rank', which assessed a state's progress from the previous year. Key Findings: 1. General Decline in State Food Safety Scores: Over the past five years, 19 out of 20 large Indian states, including Maharashtra, Bihar, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh, have experienced a decline in their 2022 - 2023 SFSI scores compared to 2019. 2. SCHEMES/PORTAL /APPS/INITIATIVES  Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina jointly inaugurated three Indian assisted development projects through video conferencing. The three projects are: Akhaura - Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, Khulna - Mongla Port Rail Line, and Unit - II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced an extension of the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) free ration scheme for another five years, while addressing poll rallies in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. About Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY): 1. The PMGKAY was first introduced in 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic, and was designed to provide 5kg free foodgrains to eligible ration card holders under the National Food Security Act, 2013 (NFSA). 2. Initially set to expire in December 2022, the scheme was extended till December 2023 and now, it has been extended for an additional five years. 3. Families belonging to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) and Priority Households (PHH) categories will be eligible for the scheme. PHH are to be identified by State Governments/Union Territory Administrations as per criteria evolved by them. AAY families are to be identified by States/UTs as per the criteria prescribed by the Central Government. 4. Its nodal Ministry is the Ministry of Finance. But the scheme is run by the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution.  The Prime Minister launched the PM-PVTG Development Mission in a bid to empower the tribals on the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, which has been celebrated as Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas (15th November). About Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs): 1. PVTGs are a more vulnerable group among tribal groups in India. 2. These groups have primitive traits, geographical isolation, low literacy, zero to negative population growth rate and backwardness. Moreover, they are largely dependent on hunting for food and a pre-agriculture level of technology. 3. Dhebar Commission is related to PVTG. 4. Currently, there are 2.8 million PVTGs belonging to 75 tribes across 22,544 villages in 220 districts across 18 states and Union Territories in India. 5. According to the 2011 Census, Odisha has the largest population of PVTGs at 866,000. It is followed by Madhya Pradesh at 609,000 and Andhra Pradesh (including Telangana) at 539,000.  The ‘AAINA Dashboard for Cities’: The ‘AAINA Dashboard for Cities’ portal www.aaina.gov.in has been made live by Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), where Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) across the country can participate in this pioneering initiative to voluntarily submit their key data on a regular basis, through a simple, easy-to-fill, data entry form on the portal. The Dashboard will present the data submitted by the ULBs on the basis of indicators across five broad pillars namely, (i) Political & Administrative Structure, (ii) Finance, (iii) Planning, (iv) Citizen Centric Governance and (v) Delivery of Basic Services.  The first international cruise liner in India: Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal launched the domestic sailing of 'Costa Serena', the first international cruise liner in India, in Mumbai. The target of 50 million cruise passengers in India by the year 2047 has also been discussed in the recently concluded Global Maritime India Summit 2023. Such cruise initiatives are part of 'Dekho Apna Desh'. The new portal is designed to promptly inform jail authorities, trial courts, and high courts about court orders for the release of prisoners.  National Medical Register (NMR): The National Medical Commission (NMC) has embarked on a mission to assign a unique identification number to every doctor in the country by the end of 2024. The cornerstone of this initiative is the creation of the National Medical Register (NMR), which will serve as a centralized repository for doctors practicing in India. This move is expected to streamline the healthcare sector and enhance transparency.  ‘ENCORE’: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has developed an in-house software named ‘ENCORE,’ which stands for Enabling Communications on Real-time Environment. ENCORE is a comprehensive software suite designed for efficient candidate and election management, offering a range of features for smooth operations during the electoral process. About Sovereign green bonds: 1. SGrBs are used to fund environmental projects. 2. The government issues SGrBs to mobilise money for green infrastructure and to reduce the economy's carbon intensity to tap into growing environmental consciousness both within and outside India.  ‘Sumpoorn’ initiative: The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has partnered with Jocata, a digital lending transformation platform, launched an initiative named ‘Sumpoorn’—a unique MSME Economic Activity Index. This index aims to provide a real-time snapshot of India’s vital MSME sector. The index relies on monthly sales data obtained from the Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) returns of credit-seeking MSMEs.  $ 4 Trillion Milestone: In a significant economic achievement, India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has crossed the $4 trillion mark in nominal terms. This milestone underscores India’s robust economic growth and solidifies its position as a major global economic force.  The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has granted approval for Not for Profit Organisations (NPOs) to enhance their fundraising capabilities through the social stock exchange. To implement this and make flexibility SEBI has decided to decrease the minimum issue size for public issuance of Zero Coupon Zero Principal Instruments (ZCZP) from Rs 1 crore to Rs 50 lakh.  The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has revised its growth projections for India, anticipating a further slowdown in the coming fiscal years. The Indian economy is expected to grow at 6.3% in FY24, slightly under the 6.7% growth seen in Q2FY24.  In a groundbreaking move, Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL), the country’s leading gas firm, has successfully executed the world’s first ship-to-ship liquefied natural gas (LNG) transfer to save on shipping costs and cut emissions.  China, the world’s second-largest economy, encountered a setback as it slipped back into deflation in October, posing a challenge for officials working to stimulate demand. About Deflation: 1. Deflation is a general decline in prices for goods and services, typically associated with a contraction in the supply of money and credit in the economy. 2. During deflation, the purchasing power of currency rises over time. Deflation is the general decline of the price level of goods and services. 3. Deflation is usually associated with a contraction in the supply of money and credit, but prices can also fall due to increased productivity and technological improvements. The decommissioning ceremony was held at INS Hansa, Dabolim.  Pralay Missile: India successfully test-fired its surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) ‘Pralay’ from the Abdul Kalam Island offs the Odisha coast. The missile has been developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). 'Pralay' is a 350-500 km short-range, surface-to-surface missile with a payload capacity of 500-1,000 kg.  BONGOSAGAR-23: The 4th edition of Bilateral Exercise between Indian Navy and Bangladesh Navy, BONGOSAGAR-23, and the 5th edition of Coordinated Patrol (CORPAT) by the two navies was conducted in the Northern Bay of Bengal. INS Kuthar, Kiltan and Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) Dornier participated in the exercise. INS Kuthar is an indigenously built guided-missile Corvette, whereas INS Kiltan is an indigenously built anti-submarine Corvette. Both ships are part of the Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet based at Visakhapatnam, which functions under the operational command of the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Naval Command.  Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023: The 9th edition of Joint Military exercise “Exercise MITRA SHAKTI-2023” between India and Sri Lanka commenced in Aundh (Pune). The Indian contingent, of 120 personnel, is being represented mainly by troops from the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment.  'Vajra Prahar 2023': The 14th edition of the Indo-US Joint Special Forces exercise 'Vajra Prahar, 2023' began at the Joint Training Node in Meghalaya's Umroi Cantonment. Indian Army contingent is led by Special Forces personnel from the Eastern Command.  Exercise SURYA KIRAN: The Nepal Army contingent arrived in India to participate in 17th edition of Joint Military Exercise SURYA KIRAN. It is an annual event and conducted alternatively in the two countries. The Indian Army contingent, comprising 354 personnel, is being led by a battalion from the Kumaon Regiment. A near-infrared laser encoded with test data was sent from a distance of nearly 10 million miles to the Hale Telescope at Caltech’s Palomar Observatory in San Diego County, California.  Tantalum in Sutlej River: A team of researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar led by Dr Resmi Sebastian has uncovered the presence of tantalum, a rare metal, in the sands of the Sutlej River in the Indian state of Punjab. About tantalum: 1. Discovered in 1802 by Swedish chemist Anders Gustaf Ekenberg, tantalum was initially confused with niobium. 2.
