Virginia Henderson defined nursing as the unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery that he would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength, will, or knowledge, and to do this in such way as to help him gain independence as rapidly as possible. A calling traditionally referred to a Christian belief that one received a spiritual calling by God, mainly to a religious life of dedication and service (Carter, 2014). In ancient times, men and women came to nursing through religious orders guided by Christian doctrine (Donahue, 1985). Florence Nightingale received a calling to service that seems to have originated from early life experiences (Fitne, 1990; Selanders, 2018). E.g. nursing, medicine, law, engineering, accountancy etc. An occupation defines the type of activity undertaken by a person to earn his livelihood or to make money, these are jobs anybody can perform at one point. A person with an occupation need not have specialized knowledge of his trade. E.g. drivers, shopkeepers, clerks, receptionists, or delivery workers What are similarities? THE CORE OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE EDUCATION 10 ORIGINS OF NURSING/HISTORY OF NURSING Nursing has evolved over time - Womens role: The primary role of women was to care for the family, in addition to caring other responsibilities included nurturing, providing comfort and support. - Religion: religion made a major contribution to nursing because of the principle “Love your neighbor as you love yourself” - The story of good Samaritan had an influence on modern nursing. - War: there was need to take care of the injured soldiers and the members of the community who got injured during times of war. ( Historical views about women and nursing). Nursing Leaders: Examples: Florence Nightingale, Clara Barton: School teacher who volunteered as a nurse during American civil War Lillian Wald: Founder of public health Nursing Lavinia Dock: Was an activist who advocated for nurses to control their profession Margret Higgins Sanger: A public Health Nurse in New York. Mary Breckinridge: She established the Frontier Nursing Service, she worked with a Committee that was distributing food, clothing and other essential supplies to the poor people. THE CORE OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE EDUCATION 12 CHARACTERISTICS/CRITERIA OF A PROFESSION 1. Specialised training: Intense training which includes natural science, social science and nursing course. 2. A profession constantly increases its body of knowledge. 3.A profession applies its body of knowledge in practical services that are essential to human welfare. 4. A Profession is autonomous and regulates itself and sets standards of its members. E.g. the NMCB 5. A profession is guided by code of Ethics that controls the relationship between the profession and client. THE CORE OF QUALITY HEALTH CARE EDUCATION 13 CHARACTERISTICS/CRITERIA OF A PROFESSION 6. A profession is distinguished by its specific culture, values and norms that its members should practice or potray. 7. A profession has a well defined standard of education preparation for entry into practice. 8.
