Steps of mouth preparation: 1- Relief of pain and infection : Removal of teeth causing pain or discomfort, inflamed gingiva 2- Oral surgical procedures: Extraction of non restorable teeth & impacted teeth, excision of interferences, ridge augmentation 3- Periodontal therapy: Preventive hygiene program, Scaling & root planing,Elimination of local irritating factors, Pocket curettage 4- Correction of occlusal plane: by Reduction of cusp heights, cast onlay, crowns, and endodontic therapy and crown 5- Correction of malalignment: Orthodontics, Crowns, Enameloplasty, and Endodontic treatment & crown 6- Correction of occlusion: modify occlusal form to equalize stresses by selective grinding 7- Abutment teeth preparation: A.. Reshaping the abutment teeth. 1- Guiding planes preparation: obtain parallel surfaces on proximal/lingual surfaces , parallel to the path of insertion Proximal guiding plane Function: stability, esthetics, and retention Lingual guiding plane Function: Reciprocation is resistance to horizontal forces done by retentive clasp arm 2- Changing height of contour: Retentive clasp arm no higher than junction between occlusal gingival third (mech. & esthetics adv.) 3- Creation of retentive undercuts: Creation of a gentle depression, slight concavity B.. Crowns: When remaining teeth do not possess natural contours. C.. Rest seat preparation. 1- Occlusal rest seat: triangular, External margins & Apex should be rounded, spoon-shaped floor, Angle between floor and tooth surface must be less than 90°, extension: 1mm chromium cobalt alloy and 1.5 mm with gold. prep: low MR, deepen floor seat, smooth angles, and apply fluoride gel 2- Lingual or cingulum rest seat.: indicated when there is no posterior tooth to place an occlusal rest. On maxillary canine, rarely incisors when canine is missing (multiple rests to distribute the load over a no. of incisors), design: half-moon shaped(lingual), V-shaped(proximal) 3- Incisal rest seat: indicated on mandibular canines and used as auxiliary rest for indirect retention. design: on distal side for esthetics. Disadvantages: display of metal objects, greater mechanical leverage than lingual rests
