Identify elements of stage and craft 2. Classify the elements of stage and craft 3. Summarize what stagecraft is ______________________________________________________________________________ Introduction Theater, stage plays, and operas are unappealing to many individuals, which shows why people prefer going to cinemas rather than watching live performances. This chapter will help you appreciate theatrical shows and productions. Before we proceed to the lesson, let‘s have an activity first. Guess the picture Identify the famous song of the musical play or film. Page 7 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 Among all the musicals or films, you’ve guessed, which one is your favorite? Why? Imagine you are a play producer; which one should be more important? Have a good storyline or make sure all elements of the play are present? Justify your answers. As J.K. Rowling famously stated, "There's always room for a story that can transport people to another place." A compelling narrative, effectively performed or delivered, is essential for a memorable show, whether in cinema or on stage. Today, we'll delve into stagecraft, a field often overlooked by younger generations. We'll also explore the intersection of art and stagecraft. Stagecraft encompasses the technical aspects of theatrical production, including scenic design, stage equipment, lighting, sound, costume design, and makeup. It's a broad term encompassing the practical realization of a designer's artistic vision in theater, film, and video. Key elements of stagecraft include lighting, sound, costumes, props, setting, plot, and characters. Let's begin by discussing lighting. As one of the core technical elements in theatrical production, alongside scenic design, stage apparatus, sound, costume design, and makeup, lighting plays a crucial role. Floodlights are commonly used to illuminate the backdrop, while spotlights focus on the actors on stage. Sound- an essential stagecraft component involves sound design, including musical understanding, vocal and instrumental mixing, and theatrical sound effects. Two key types of sound are employed: sound reinforcement, which amplifies performers' voices, and sound reproduction, encompassing recorded music and sound effects. Costume- or costuming, encompasses costume design, construction, procurement, and maintenance. Costumes are the attire worn by actors to embody their characters. Page 8 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 Props- are essential elements in a production, encompassing furnishings, set dressing, and items used by actors. We categorize props into three types: hand, set, and decorative. Hand props are small objects handled by actors, such as letters or weapons. Set props are oversized items like furniture or significant objects within the scene. Decorative props enhance the set's aesthetic without direct actor interaction. Plot- outlines the sequence of events in a story. It typically consists of five elements: Exposition: The introduction establishes the setting and characters. Rising action: A series of events building tension towards the conflict. Climax: The turning point or highest point of tension. Falling action: The events following the climax, leading to the resolution. Resolution: The conclusion or outcome of the story. Setting- refers to the environment or context in which a story unfolds. There are two primary types: backdrop and integral settings. A backdrop setting is a generic environment that doesn't significantly impact the story. It could be replaced without altering the plot. In contrast, an integral setting is deeply intertwined with the narrative, influencing characters, themes, and actions. For example, in the fantasy world of Encantadia, the realm itself is an integral setting. It defines the characters, their abilities, and the overall magical atmosphere. Removing Encantadia would drastically change the story. On the other hand, a scene where an Encantado travels to another location would be considered a backdrop setting, as it doesn't fundamentally affect the core plot. Characterization- is a literary technique used to develop characters. There are two primary methods: direct and indirect characterization. Direct/ Explicit characterization- explicitly states a character's traits, often through narration or dialogue. For example, a narrator might describe a character as "kind and compassionate." Indirect/ Implicit characterization- requires the audience to infer character traits through actions, speech, thoughts, appearance, and interactions with others. In the television series "Killer Bride," the audience gradually uncovers the killer's identity through these indirect clues, creating suspense and intrigue. We'll explore their roles and the stories they've brought to life on stage. 1. Lea Salonga A multiple award-winning actress and singer, she is globally recognized for her powerful voice and perfect pitch. Best known for her Tony Award-winning portrayal of Kim in Miss Saigon, she made history as the first Asian to play Eponine in the 1987 Broadway production of Les Misérables. She later returned to the iconic musical, taking on the role of Fantine in the 2006 revival. 2. Rachel Ann Go Page 12 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 Rachelle Ann Go is a globally acclaimed actress and singer renowned for her powerful vocals. Since then, she has released seven multi-platinum albums, performed in numerous shows and international concerts, and expanded her theater credits to include Fantine in the West End production of Les Misérables. In recognition of her lifelong dedication to Filipino theater and music, her exceptional artistry as a singer and zarzuela performer, playwright, and producer, and her tireless efforts to share her art with audiences nationwide and internationally, Atang Dela Rama was named a National Artist in 1987. 5. Nonie Buencamino Nonie Buencamino is a respected Filipino character actor renowned for his contributions to theater. The story begins on a Friday night in April 1975 in Saigon. A seventeen-year-old orphan named Kim was struggling to survive after her parents' death. An engineer and bar owner approached her with a job offer as a waitress at Dreamland. Unaware of the harsh reality awaiting her, desperate to make a living, Kim accepted. Dreamland catered to American Marines, where bar girls competed in performances. The winner would be offered marriage to an American soldier, seen as a path to a better life. Gigi Van Trang was crowned Miss Saigon. After the performance, customers mingled and selected companions for the evening. Among them were American GIs Chris and John. Impressed by Kim's innocence, Chris watched as the Engineer pushed her into the spotlight. Gigi proposed marriage to Chris, but John, aware of Chris's interest in Kim, intervened. He negotiated with the Engineer to secure Kim for Chris. A connection formed between Kim and Chris as they danced. Chris was troubled by her circumstances and invited her to leave the bar. Their relationship deepened, and they professed their love for each other. However, Chris faced the challenge of returning to America. He proposed a deal with the Engineer for another night with Kim, offering money instead of a visa. With the support of the other bar girls, Kim moved in with Chris. They celebrated their union with a traditional wedding song and toast, crowning Kim the new Miss Saigon. Their happiness was abruptly interrupted by the arrival of Thuy, Kim's fiancé, determined to rescue her from her life as a bar girl. Enraged upon seeing Chris, Thuy is met with defiance from Kim. She rejects their arranged marriage, declaring her loyalty to Chris. Before leaving, Thuy issues a chilling ultimatum: she belongs to him forever. Heartbroken, Chris departs for America, promising Kim a return and providing her with a gun for protection. Three years later, Thuy, now a powerful commissar, launches a search for Kim with the Engineer's help. Kim remains in hiding. When confronted by Thuy, she refuses his marriage proposal, revealing their two-year-old son, Tam. Thuy's violent intentions toward the child force Kim to take drastic action. She shoots and kills Thuy in self-defense, a horrifying act that doesn't deter her resolve to reunite with Chris in America. Meanwhile, in America, Chris is now married to Ellen. Haunted by recurring nightmares of Kim's demise, he awakens one night shouting her name. Aware of his troubled past, Ellen reaffirms her commitment to their marriage. Back in Southeast Asia, the Engineer is preparing to leave for Bangkok when Kim and Tam unexpectedly appear, seeking his help. Recognizing an opportunity to secure his passage to America, the Engineer agrees to assist them, joining the Vietnamese refugees bound for Bangkok. Page 15 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 Part. 2. John learned of Kim and Tam's whereabouts in Bangkok from the Engineer. He informed Chris of his son's existence. Aware of the complications his past relationship with Kim would cause, Chris confronted the situation head-on, bringing Ellen along for support. John facilitated a meeting between Chris and Kim, providing their location to the Engineer. Kim eagerly awaited his arrival, overwhelmed with joy at the prospect of reuniting with Chris. However, fate intervened. Upon arriving at the hotel, Ellen encountered Kim and sensed an immediate connection to Chris's past. A heart-wrenching confrontation ensued, leaving Kim devastated. Despite her pain, she prioritized Tam's well-being, proposing that Ellen take custody of their son. Ellen, however, declined. Determined to secure a future for Tam, Kim devised a tragic plan. She sent the Engineer ahead with their son, staging a heartbreaking farewell. As Chris and Ellen approached, Kim took her own life, the sound of the gunshot echoing through the room. Chris arrived to find Kim lifeless in his arms. 2. Les Miserables The story unfolds in France, beginning with Jean Valjean, a former convict imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread. His sentence was extended due to multiple escape attempts. Ostracized and mistreated for his criminal past, Valjean found unexpected kindness in Bishop Myriel. Valjean's criminal tendencies resurfaced despite this compassion, leading to the theft of the bishop's silverware. Caught in the act, he was spared arrest when the bishop claimed to have gifted the items. Moved by the bishop's generosity, Valjean resolved to embark on a new life. Assuming Madeleine's identity, he relocated to Montreuil-sur-Mer and built a successful life, eventually becoming the town's mayor. Fantine, a young woman, falls deeply in love with Tholomyes. Their relationship takes a tragic turn when she becomes pregnant, and Tholomyes abandons her. Forced to make a heartbreaking decision, Fantine entrusts her newborn daughter, Cosette, to the Thenardiers, a local innkeeper family, in exchange for financial support. Unable to find stable employment due to societal prejudice against single mothers, Fantine's circumstances deteriorate. To Page 16 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 provide for Cosette, she takes on factory work at Madeleine's company, concealing her daughter's existence. When her secret is exposed, Fantine is fired and descends into desperation, turning to prostitution. Arrested for this crime, she is rescued by Madeleine, who recognizes her from their shared past. Unaware of Fantine's declining health, Madeleine promises to reunite her with Cosette. However, Fantine succumbs to illness before their reunion. Determined to honor his promise to her, Madeleine finds Cosette living in dire conditions with the Thenardiers. He takes her in as his adopted daughter, offering her a chance at a better life. Cosette grows into a beautiful young woman and captures the heart of Marius, a law student. Their budding romance is complicated by the presence of Eponine, the Thenardiers' daughter, secretly in love with Marius. Despite Eponine's affections, Marius and Cosette's love deepens. Meanwhile, Madeleine's past as the escaped convict Jean Valjean resurfaces, threatening his newfound life. Javert, a relentless police officer, discovers Madeleine's true identity, creating a dangerous situation. As the French Revolution looms, Marius becomes involved in the uprising, and the intricate web of relationships among these characters begins to unravel. As mayor, Madeleine confronted Javert on a secluded cliff. Instead of retribution, he offered Javert a chance at redemption and escape, mirroring the bishop's kindness towards him. However, driven by pride, Javert chose death over a new beginning, taking his own life. Marius and Cosette, seeking refuge from the disruption, eventually reconciled with Madeleine. They sought his forgiveness and spent precious time together before his passing. Madeleine found peace in their reunion, passing away with a contented heart. 3. Dalagang Bukid Angelita, a young flower vendor, was deeply in love with Cipriano, a law student. Her parents, struggling with gambling debts, saw an opportunity in the town's upcoming beauty pageant, "La Vanguardia," where the winner would marry the wealthy Don Silvestre. Despite her relationship with Cipriano and initial reluctance, Angelita was forced into joining the pageant by her desperate parents. Page 17 of 25 HCDC-VAA-WI-05.01 Ultimately, Angelita won the pageant, forcing her into an arranged marriage with Don Silvestre. On their wedding day, Cipriano intervened, revealing Angelita's true love and her sacrifices. Moved by their genuine love, Don Silvestre relinquished his claim, allowing Angelita and Cipriano to marry. 4. The Kundiman Party "Kundiman Party" is a contemporary play centered around Maestra Adela Dolores, a retired singer with a renewed passion for the Kundiman art song and its potential to inspire nationalism. Her unlikely partnership with Bobby, a young, tech-savvy activist, ignites a viral movement. Their unconventional protest tactics generate both admiration and controversy, reflecting the complexities of modern times. The play introduces Juancho Valderrama, a corrupt senator, and Bobby's estranged father. Despite their differences, a deep-rooted familial bond persists. Bobby's rebellious spirit, shaped by his upbringing, clashes with his father's political ambitions. Their dynamic relationship complicates the narrative, raising questions about parental love and political responsibility. Maestra Adela's unique persona, marked by her distinct accent, becomes pivotal in the play. Her character challenges the audience to question the boundaries between reality and performance. The play's ultimate message is a call to action, urging viewers to resist complacency and continue the fight for positive change, even in the face of adversity.
