Objectives: a. Identify and describe the different types of tissues b. Show love and care for the body by practicing good health habits II. Discussion Tissues Tissue a group of similar cells that perform one or more specific functions in the body. Four Main Types of Tissues These cover the outside and inside, as in the skin and the lining of the digestive tract. Its functions are protection and producing 1. Epithelial Tissues hormones which help in normal functioning of the body. Also known as contractile tissue. It makes the body move and work. 3 Types of Muscle Tissue: a. Voluntary muscles- its actions or movement can be controlled(muscle tissue of 2. Muscle tissue arms and legs) b. Involuntary muscles –its movement can’t be controlled(ex. Muscle tissue of the stomach, intestines, lungs) c. Cardiac muscle- is a special kind of muscles which can be found in the heart. Tissue that coordinates the organism in relation to its external environment as well 3. Nerve tissue as those that coordinate the parts of the organism internally. Tissue that connects organs to each other, protect and support them. Kinds of Connective Tissue a. Fatty Tissue-forms a thick layer under the skin and occurs around the kidneys and buttock. 4. Connective tissue b. Cartilage-protects the bone from hitting each other. It covers joint surfaces and ribs end and is present in the nose and in the tracheal rings. c. Fibrous –consists of scattered cells, rounded or branched in forms, with the intercellular spaces occupied by delicate fibers(ex. tendons and ligaments) Page 2 Specialized Bone tissue is unique in that its extracellular Blood Connective Tissue matrix is mineralized. Calcium phosphate, in the form of hydroxyapatite crystals, is responsible for the mineralization of bone and creates a very strong tissue able to support and protect the body. Blood is a fluid connective tissue that transports gases, nutrients, and wastes throughout the body. Bone tissue Cells Form Tissues Cells differ not only in shape but also in the work they perform. Cells of the same kind that perform a particular function form a tissue. Tissues Form Organs The cell organization does not stop with the grouping of cells into tissues. Tissues form units called organs. An organ is a group of similar tissue working together to perform a particular function within the body. Organs Form Body System Cells make up tissues. Tissues make up organs. Organs make up body systems. A body system is a group of different organs that work together to perform a particular function in the body. An example is the digestive system. It is made up of the mouth, teeth, tongue, esophagus, stomach, small intestines and many glands. Body Systems Form an Organism Cells are organized into tissues; tissues are organized into organs; organs are organized into systems; and systems are organized into a living system called the organism. What is an organism? DID YOU KNOW? Joseph Murray Joseph Murray and his team performing the first successful kidney transplant in 1954 using as a donor the recipient's identical twin. The surgery of kidney transplantation is straightforward, and the patient can be kept fit by dialysis with an artificial kidney before and after the operation.
