MODULE 2: Communication and Globalization Expected Learning Outcomes: 1. Deeper understanding of the concepts of communication and globalization 2. Enhanced ability to critically analyze their relationship and the significant effects they created. Group dynamics (10min) Objectives: 1. Discuss what globalization is? 2. What triggers globalization? 3. Identify scenarios that depict globalization? Lesson 1: Impact of Globalization on Communication What is GLOBALIZATION? Globalization Refers to the “processes through which local and regional ideas, products, and practices are transformed into worldwide ideas, products, and practices (Griffin and Bone, 2014 as cited Suarez, C., et.al.) It is a multidimensional process, affecting almost all the institutions not only of the developing societies but also of the developed societies. It refers to the widening, deepening and speeding up of global connectivity of all facets of social life (Singh, N, 2021) Globalization It’s world movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration. It also implies the opening of local and nationalistic perspectives to a broader outlook Expansion of global linkages; the organization of social life on a global scale Three main perspectives on Globalization Hyperglobalizers Skeptics Transformationalists Source: Held et al, 1999 as cited by Singh 2021) Three main perspectives on Globalization Hyperglobalizers - believe that globalization represents a new epoch in human history, in which all types of relationships are becoming integrated at the global level, transcending the nation states and making it increasingly irrelevant. Three main perspectives on Globalization The Skeptics - who also focus on economic aspects of globalisation argue that there is nothing new about this international economic integration. - It is comparable to the period preceding to First World War. They generally prefer the term ‘internationalisation’ to globalisation. - They also argue that the role of the nation-state remains as strong as ever (Singh, 2004). Three main perspectives on Globalization Transformationalists - argue that globalisation is the central driving force behind the major economic, cultural, social and political changes that are affecting virtually all the world’s people today. - Globalisation is seen as the overall consequences of closely inter-linked processes of change in the areas of technology, economic activity, governance, communication and so on. - Developments in all these areas are mutually reinforcing or reflexive, so that no clear distinction can be drawn between cause and effect (Singh, 2004 ). - Its impact can also be observed in the field of mass media communication and other social and cultural institutions of the society. Examples of Globalization The internet Online markets Webinars, web-conferences Social media Assignment Objectives: 1. How are the concepts of communication and globalization related to each other? 2. How has communication changed from then and now? What are the advantages and disadvantages. 3. Describe a global village, especially in terms of communication Maximum of 2 pages Use refereed journals (max of 3 refereed journals) Employ critical analysis - conduct review of literature and assess among your group mates the information you gathered to answer the questions above. Globalization & Communication Interconnected, each influencing and enhancing the other in significant ways. Heavily influenced by technologies Globalization Slogan “think globally, act locally” by environmental advocates (late 1980s) -supporting local farms growing coffee beans instead of imported coffee -multinational companies study popular local flavors in certain then bring the idea in local market ( spaghetti in food chain in QC) Globalization Media reports and features on current events and issues have also heightened awareness for everyday injustices brought on by – Stereotyping – Prejudice – Discrimination – Ethnocentrism 1. Stereotyping a specific belief or assumption (thoughts) about individuals based solely on their membership in a group, regardless of their individual characteristics. 2. Prejudice a negative attitude and feeling toward an individual based solely on one’s membership in a particular social group (Allport, 1954; Brown, 2010) 3. Discrimination is negative action toward an individual as a result of one’s membership in a particular group (Allport, 1954; Dovidio & Gaertner, 2004). 4. Ethnocentrism A belief that one’s culture is better than others and/or the tendency to believe that what is true of your culture is true of others. How Globalization Affects Communication Connecting with people on the other side of the world is now much easier than it was a few years ago. Satellites, fiber-optic cables, and the internet make it effortless to share information with those in different time zones and locations. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication 1. Increased business opportunities Companies today hire employees that are located in other countries with communication vehicles such as video calling make it simple to converse with colleagues across the globe, almost making it feel as if they are in the same room. Technology also makes it easier to connect with suppliers and customers all over the world, and to streamline those relationship through improved ordering, shipment tracking, and so on. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… 2. Fewer Cultural Barriers Many people perceive culture to be the root of communication challenges. When people from two different cultures try to exchange information, the way they speak, their body language or their mannerisms can be interpreted differently by the other person. The way people approach problems and how they participate in communities is all influenced by culture. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… 2. Fewer Cultural Barriers Globalization has made it possible, for example, for someone in Japan to understand how someone in the U.S. goes about their day. With television and movies, cultural barriers are becoming less prevalent. Being able to communicate effectively and frequently with colleagues or friends across the planet helps people understand each other’s cultures a little better. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… 3. Creation of a Global Village Global village – a term coined by theorist Marshall McLuhan to describe the impact of communication and transportation technologies which reduce the distance between parts of the world. It is commonly used to describe the societal and cultural effects of telecommunications Electronic communication shrinks distances, while increasing opportunities for talk and cross-cultural sharing. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… ….Creation of a Global Village - This is affected by both globalization and global communication. - It is created when distance and time no longer matter because people are connected by technology. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… - The wide-spread telephone and internet access have been life-changing for many people across the world, especially for those in developing countries. - Examples of this are the online courses, distance learning (open university) without having to leave their desks. How Cultural and Global Issues Affect Communication, cont’d… Virtual assistant jobs, such as online tutorials, e- commerce, provision of administrative support, and other business services over the phone or internet, are also commonplace. Globalization and global communication have made it easier to see people and the other side of the world, and access to the knowledge about other countries and cultures available online. How has globalization affected how people communicate? Globalization widens our circle and we can communicate with many people around the world. It leads to greater understanding of cultural nuances in terms of speech, body language, and etiquette. It leads to the adoption of video conferencing, emails, and instant messaging.
