Through His Son Jesus Christ, He established the Church and announced the good news of His Kingdom by calling people to conversion and to His mission. To be one with the world, the Church should be faithful to Jesus’s mission, to be present and universal at all times. The Church has to be a sign of happiness and salvation in the different dimensions of life. These dimensions are: Body-nature; I-Thou relationship; socio-political; cultural- historical; thought and action; Sacred Law. Course Description: Sacraments help us reflect upon our lives so that events and relationships are appreciated with the deep meaning that Jesus can give us. The Sacraments are the celebration of the discovery of God and the meaning that God gives to our lives to Jesus. They speak of a real Word, the Word of God, and uses a language of symbols to express the real presence of their creative God. Sacraments are celebrations of the important moments of life, pointing to the “mystery” of His presence among us. As we go on our life’s journey, they speak to us of the indwelling Spirit. LEARNING OUTCOMES: At the end of the course, the students should be able to: 1. understand and synthesize the meaning of the Church as a historical people journeying toward holiness; 2.reflect on one’s life experience in the development of the Church as it responds to the challenges of the ever- changing world; 3.conduct a sacramental celebration in the community; and 4. participate fully, actively, and consciously in the celebration of the sacraments. Chapter I: God the Father Unites All Human Persons A. The Beginning of the Church B. The Chosen People of God: Short historical roots of the people of God from Israel (OT) to Church (NT). C. The Church - instituted by Christ Jesus D. The Mystery of the Church Share your opinion What do you think the Church is? What are your experiences of your Church? If you want to use a symbol or image to describe the Church, what would it be? Why? A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH I BELIEVE IN ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC AND APOSTOLIC CHURCH – Nicene Creed 325 AD. A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH The Council of Nicea (present-day Iznik, Turkey) in 325 - the first Ecumenical Council in 300 years of Christianity, - and the second Council of the Church. Jerusalem 50 A.D. (Acts 15) was the first council of the Church, attended by the Apostles themselves headed by Peter. Church’ council is an official gathering of Church’ leaders and authorities headed by the Pope to discuss and settle issues concerning faith and morals. At the end of the Council, the council Fathers would issue constitutions, declarations, decree that would become normative for all believers. A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH Council proclamations govern the faith and life of the Church distributed in three laws: - lex orandi (law of praying), - lex credendi (law of believing), and - lex vivendi (law of living). Second Vatican Council which happened between 1963-1965. Vatican II produced four (4) constitutions, three (3) declarations, and nine (9) decrees that renewed the Church into the 20th century. A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH “to believe that the Church is ‘holy’ and ‘catholic,’ and that she is ‘one’ and ‘apostolic’ is inseparable from belief in God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (CCC 750). Hence, the Church has its beginning in the Holy Trinity and progresses its realization in human history (CCC 758). This means that in this world, the Church is a visible sign of an invisible reality; this is the A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH how did the Church become inseparable to the reality of God? Vatican II declared that “the eternal Father, by a free and hidden plan of His own wisdom and goodness, created the whole world. His plan was to raise men to a participation of the divine life” (LGHis2). divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our -“ knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires” (2 Peter 1:2-4). - God “wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth (1 Tim 2:4). A. THE BEGINNING OF THE CHURCH "The Father... determined to call together in a holy Church those who should believe in Christ." This "family of God" is gradually formed and takes shape during the stages of human history, in keeping with the Father's plan. In fact, "already present in figure at the beginning of the world, this Church was prepared in marvelous fashion in the history of the people of Israel and the old Alliance. Established in this last age of the world and made manifest in the outpouring of the Spirit, it will be brought to glorious completion at the end of time" (CCC 759). Four Characteristics of the Church The Church as One – unity of all the members with the head, that is, one in faith, in worship and in apostolic succession. These are the bonds of unity. (CCC 815) The Church as Holy – divine aspect of the church (CCC823). Church as Catholic – universal sense, “in keeping with the whole.” (CCC830). Two senses of the word universal: one, because Christ is present in her; second, because she has been sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole human race.(Mt 28:19) Church as Apostolic – direct linkage Experiential Learning Activities Art -based activities. - Imagine an image, symbol, or sign that would signify the reality of the Church as the People of God. - Draw or illustrate it on a piece of paper. - Make it as presentable as possible (color, dimensions, textures, perspectives - visual elements of an artwork). - Attached it to your essay as the first page.
