MODULE 1 – TEACHING AND LEARNING WITH TECHNOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION OVERVIEW Human beings have evolved so much over the years. Since time immemorial, man has learned, created and utilized technology already. These technologies have made life better but at the same time, complicated. Technologies have been used in all aspects of life, even in education. Truly, it makes teaching and learning more advanced, more fun, and more interactive. MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the module, the students are expected to: 1. Identify the competency standards of ICT for teaching and learning in pre-service teacher education. 2. Understand the basic concepts of ICT. 3. Value the use of ICT in the teaching and learning process. MODULE OUTLINE Lesson 1 – ICT Competency Standards for Philippines Pre-Service Teacher Education Lesson 2 – Understanding the Basic Concepts in ICT Lesson 3 – Roles of Technology for Teaching and Learning LESSON 1 – ICT COMPETENCY STANDARDS FOR PHILIPPINES PRE- SERVICE TEACHER EDUCATION OVERVIEW With the influx of so many gadgets and technological equipments nowadays, one will be overwhelmed by it, especially those who are into using traditional technologies. Everyone can easily learn how to manipulate it but the difficulty lies on how to use and maximize them properly. Hence, skills on ICT must be developed especially in the teaching and learning process. Since it is one of those skills that should be present among the 21st century learners, it is a must that pre-service teachers should know how to make employ these technologies to enhance educational revolution. LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to: 1. Identify the competency standards of ICT necessary in teaching for pre-service teacher education. 2. Familiarize oneself with the ISTE National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers. LET’S GET READY Look at the two teachers below. Teacher A Teacher B LET’S GET READY 1. Educational Technology – refers to the art or craft of responding to our educational needs. -includes all educational inventions – old and new to satisfy our human need to learn. -is a field study which is concerned with the practice of using educational methods and resources for the ultimate goal facilitating the learning process (Lucido and Borabo, 2015). “TECHNOLOGY IS MORE THAN HARDWARE. Technology - is not just machines. - it is a “planned, systematic method of working to achieve planned outcomes – a process and not a product. - is the applied side of scientific development. (Dale, 1969) - also refers to any valid and reliable process or procedure that is derived from basic research using the scientific method. - refers to “all the ways people use their inventions and discoveries to satisfy their needs and desires” (The World Book Encyclopedia, Vol 19). Educational Technology – refers to how people use their inventions and discoveries to satisfy their educational needs and desires, i.e. learning. - is “a complex, integrated process involving people, procedures, ideas, devices, and organization for analyzing problems and devising, implementing, evaluating, and managing solutions to those problems, involved in all aspects of human learning. ” (Association for Educational Communications and Technology, 1977) Educational Technology – “consists of the designs and environments that engage learners … and reliable technique or method for engaging learning such as cognitive learning strategies and critical thinking skills.” (David H. Jonassen et al., 1999). - is a theory about how problems in human learning are identified and solved. (David H. Jonassen, Kyle L. Peck, Brent G. Wilson, 1999). - As a theory, educational technology has an “integrated set of principles that explain and predict observed events.” Educational Technology – is a field involved in applying a complex, integrated process to analyze and solve problems in human learning (David H. Jonassen et al., 1999). - is a field study which is concerned with the practice of using educational methods and resources for the ultimate goal of facilitating the learning process (Lucido and Borabo, 1997). - as a field, it operates within the total field of education. - is a profession like teaching. It is made up of organized effort to implement the theory, intellectual technique, and practical application of educational technology (David H. Jonassen et al., 1999). Educational Technology – it is the application of scientific findings in our method, process or procedure of working in the field of education in order to effect learning. - It embraces curriculum and instructional design, learning environment, theories of teaching- learning. - It is also a field study and a profession. - It is the use of all human inventions for teachers to realize their mission to teach in order that students learn. The program outcomes for teacher education degrees clearly state that every future teacher “demonstrate proficiency in the development and utilization of Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) resources in promoting quality teaching-learning process.” The competencies were identified to be developed by every pre-service teacher (CHED-UNESCO, Bangkok, 2009). The ICT Competency Standards is made up of seven domains with a set of competencies that are expressed in desired learning outcomes. These will enable teachers to handle learners of the 21st century in their future classroom.  Domain 1 : Understanding ICT in Education 1.1. Demonstrate awareness of policies affecting ICT in education. 1.2. Comply with ICT policies as they affect teaching-learning. 1.3. Contextualize ICT policies to the learning environment.  Domain 2 : Curriculum and Assessment 2.1. Demonstrate understanding of concepts, principles and theories of ICT systems as they apply to teaching-learning. 2.2. Evaluate digital and non-digital learning resources in response to student’s diverse needs. 2.3. Develop digital learning resources to enhance teaching-learning. 2.4. Use ICT tools to develop 21st century skills: information media and technology skills, learning and innovation skills, career skills and effective communication skills.  Domain 3 : Pedagogy 3.1. Apply relevant technology tools for classroom activities. 3.2. Use ICT knowledge to solve complex problems and support student collaborative activities. 3.3. Model collaborative knowledge construction in face-to-face and virtual environments.  Domain 4 : Technology Tools 4.1. Demonstrate competence in the technical operations of technology tools and systems as they apply to teaching and learning. 4.2. Use technology tools to create new learning opportunities to support community of learners. 4.3. Demonstrate proficiency in the use of technology tools to support teaching and learning.  Domain 5 : Organization and Administration 5.1. Manage technology-assisted instruction in an inclusive classroom environment. 5.2. Exhibit leadership in shared decision-making using technology tools.  Domain 6 : Teacher Professional Learning 6.1. Explore existing and emerging technology to acquire additional content and pedagogical knowledge. 6.2. Utilize technology tools in creating communities of practice. 6.3. Collaborate with peers, colleagues, and stakeholders to access information in support of professional learning.  Domain 7 : Teacher Disposition 7.1. Demonstrate social, ethical, and legal responsibility in the use of technology tools and resources. 7.2. Show positive attitude towards the use of technology tools. The Department of Education issued DepEd Order No. 42, Series 2017 mandating the use of the Philippine Professional Standard for Teachers (PPST) to start with the Beginning Teachers who are the fresh graduates from the teacher education program. The document includes: Show skills in the positive use of ICT to facilitate teaching and learning and Show skills in the selection, development and use of the variety of teaching-learning resources including ICT to address learning goals. Learning these competencies will assure the learners in the class of a more enjoyable, creative and innovative ways in teaching and learning. LET’S TRY THIS With the use of the ICT Competency Standards, identify the domain to which the given course learning outcome belongs. 1. Explain ICT policies and safety issues as they impact on the teaching-learning process. _____________________ 2. Integrate media and technology in various content areas. ____________________ 3. Apply learning theories and principles in the design and development of lessons through appropriate media and technologies for teaching and learning. ____________ 4. Formulate teaching-learning experiences and assessment tasks using appropriate and innovative technologies. _______ 5. Demonstrate social, ethical, and legal responsibilities in the use of technology tools and resources. __________________ In every project that we need to accomplish, we specifically design and enumerate our guidelines, criteria, or specifications which meet our standards. Administrators and teachers with the support of the national educational departments and organizations define their standards that would guide and help the students in possessing the knowledge and skills that are required of them to make them successful learners and professionals in the future. The use of technology in education is likewise guided by standards to develop among learners the skills that they need to possess for the 21st century for them to be able to serve not only themselves but the world. ISTE is a non-profit organization that promotes the use of technology to support and enhance teaching and learning. There are three standards that have been developed by ISTE for better connection and empowerment among administrators, teachers and students: Standards for Administrators Standards for Teachers Standards for Students According to Merriam-Webster’s Learner’s Dictionary, “standard is an idea or thing used as a measure, norm or model in comparative evaluations.” It can also be defined as a level of quality, achievement that is considered acceptable or desirable; something that is very good and that is used to make judgment about the quality of other things; or something established by authority, custom, or general consent as a model or example. According to Dictionary.com, “standard is a rule or principle that is used as a basis for judgment.” From the freedictionary.com, “standard is a degree or level of requirement, excellence, or attainment.” “Standards” in incorporating the use of technology in education would mean something that would serve as a guide to assist the administrators, teachers, and learners in achieving quality and excellence in teaching and learning. ISTE Standards for Teachers ISTE standards for teachers state that effective teachers not only support technologies in education, they design, create, implement, promote and model the use of technologies to enable them to teach the lessons and its contents with quality. ISTE Standards for Teachers Technology Operations and Concepts. Teachers demonstrate a sound understanding of technology operations and concepts. Planning and Designing Learning Environment and Experiences. Teachers utilize the use of technology to plan and design effective learning environments and experiences. ISTE Standards for Teachers Teaching, Learning and Curriculum. Teachers should be mindful that in the implementation of curriculum plan, they have to include strategies for applying technology to maximize student learning.  Assessment and Evaluation. Teachers apply technology to facilitate a variety of effective assessment and evaluation strategies to collect and analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to improve instructional practice and maximize student learning. ISTE Standards for Teachers  Productivity and Professional Practice. Teachers use technology to engage in on-going professional development and lifelong learning in support of student learning, increase productivity and to build community of learners.  Social, Ethical, Legal and Human Issues. Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology in support of student learning who come from diverse background, affirm diversity, promote safe and healthy use of technology resources and facilitate access to technology resources for all students. ISTE Standards for Students Teachers facilitate students’ cognitive, affective and psychomotor learning to enable the students to be life-ready and world-ready. Students are more guided in learning both knowledge and skills that will soon make a big contribution to the community and society. ISTE Standards for Students Creativity and innovation. Students exhibit constructive learning by generating new ideas out of the existing knowledge. They create, explore, develop and innovate products with the help of technology. ISTE Standards for Students Communication and collaboration. Students make use of a variety of technological tools and digital media to effectively converse, interact, disseminate information, communicate, and collaborate with their peers to work on their school projects and other tasks. ISTE Standards for Students Research and information fluency. Students utilize to search and select for data and information, organize, process, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information. Students likewise produce the processed reports with the aid of the digital and technological tools. ISTE Standards for Students Critical thinking, problem solving, and decision making. Students use appropriate digital and technological tools in practicing their creative and critical thinking skills to identify problems, plan, investigate, collect, process, analyze information in developing solutions that help in decision making. ISTE Standards for Students Digital citizenship. Students practice ethical, legal, and responsible use of information, communication, and technology in learning and production of outputs. Technology operations and concepts. Students exhibit awareness and knowledge in the effective selection and usage of technology which allow them to learn, improve, and innovate.
