Republic of the Philippines CENTRAL BICOL STATE UNIVERSITY OF AGRICULTURE Calabanga | Pasacao | Pili | Sipocot METHODS OF COLLECTING DATA Learning objectives 1. Identify the different methods of collecting data. What is Data? Data are simply units of information. Data are measured, collected, reported, analyzed, and used to create data visualizations such as graphs, tables or Images. Types of Data 1. Quantitative Data A numerical information or data that can be measured and expressed in numbers. 2. Qualitative Data A categorical measurement expresses information or data that does not have a number associated with it. Source of Data 1. Primary Data Primary data are those that are collected for the first time and are original. 2. Secondary Data Secondary data are those which have already been collected by someone else and are available from other sources. Identify what type of data is in the picture. 1. 2. Identify what source of data is in the picture. 3. 4. Methods of Collecting Data I. Census II. Sampling III. Observational Study IV. Experiment I. Census Obtains data from every member of a population. Survey of the whole population. II. SAMPLING Obtains data from a subset of population , in order to estimate population attributes. Obtain a representative sample of the population. III. OBSERVATIONAL STUDY Basically, a researcher goes out into the world and look for variables that are associated with one another The researcher determine which subjects are to be in control and which is treatment IV. EXPERIMENT A scientific that carried out in order to discover whether a theory of hypothesis is correct or what the results of a particular course of action would be. Types of Experiment A. Controlled Generally compares the result obtained from an experimental sample against a control sample. Types of Experiment B. Natural or Quasi-Experimental Relies solely on observations of the variables of the system under study. Types of Experiment C. Field Experiments Outcomes are observed in a natural setting rather than in an unnatural laboratory environment. Identify what method of collection of data is in the picture. 5. 6.
