Why is it important to be aware of how we speak in formal settings versus informal settings? Speech Style: Intimate, Casual, Consultative, Formal, and Frozen Learning Competency At the end of this lesson, the students should be able to distinguish types of speeches and speech style (EN11/12OC- Objectives At the end of this lesson, the learner should be able to do the following: Define what a speech style is. Enumerate the different speech styles. Essential Questions Question How do we vary our speech style from one situation to another? Speech Style -is “the way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed,” and it corresponds to specific contexts. It generally occurs in interpersonal contexts. -Martin Joos’ 1976- the form of language that the speaker uses which characterized by the degree of formality from the most formal to the least formal style. Speech Style -In his book The Five Clocks, Dutch linguist Martin Joos identified five speech styles: intimate, casual, consultative, formal, and frozen. These speech styles are also called language registers. Intimate Style -Intimate conversations take place between persons of close alliances or relationships. This style is used in conversations between people who have close personal relationships, such as family members, partners, or very close friends. The language is highly informal, often includes private vocabulary, and may rely on non-verbal cues or implied meanings because the speakers share a deep familiarity. For example, inside jokes or pet names are common in this style. Intimate Style Example: Married couples, lovers, and family members The intimate speech style is usually used by persons who are close or very familiar with each other. In this style, the language used may be both formal and informal depending on the situation and the matter being talked about. Casual Style -Casual conversations take place between classmates, friends, or coworkers. -Casual style is common among peers and friends. Free and easy participation of both speaker and listener. Diction or vocabulary to use is informal or colloquial. The casual speech style when you talk to your classmates, peers, and other people. Who are not as close to you as your family members or are not in your innermost circle of family and best friends. Reflect Upon! Consultative This style is more structured and is often used in professional or semi-formal interactions, such as between a doctor and a patient, a teacher and a student, or colleagues in a meeting. It is less formal than the formal style, but still involves some level of planning and organization. The speaker may seek feedback or clarification from the listener, and both parties usually follow established norms Consultative consultative -Style conversations happen in two-way participation. It is used in negotiating with the strangers or work colleagues. -To consult or to ask or seek advice from a person, usually a professional who has an expertise on a specific subject or field. You use consultative style of speech when talking to a doctor, lawyer, engineer, counselor, and other professionals who you think can help you with your need for information, advice, or opinion. -Aside from the degree of closeness between the persons involved, the use of a specific speech style depend on the topic being discussed and on the purpose of the communicators For instance, a mother and a daughter may use the intimate speech style when they are talking about school matters. Meanwhile, they may use the casual speech style when they are talking about hobbies or vacations. Formal -is to inform and captivate Style audience According to Joos: Formal Speech Style generally used in formal situation, where there is the least common amount of shared background and the communication in this style is largely one way with little or no -Formal speech is used in situations where the speaker is addressing a large audience or in settings that demand a high level of respect and decorum, such as a business presentation, public speech, or official ceremony. The language is structured, planned, and follows specific , avoiding slang or casual expressions. The focus is on clarity, professionalism, and Frozen -Also known as static or fixed speech, this Style style is characterized by a set structure that does not change over time. It is often found in religious texts, legal documents, pledges, or traditional rituals where the wording is memorized and repeated exactly as written. The language is highly formal and symbolic, with little to no interaction between the speaker and the audience. Frozen -follows Style much stricter rules in wording, content, and format. The words used for this speech style cannot be changed as they are permanently inscribed in a document such as a preamble of the Philippine constitution. or a dedication on a commemorative marker for a historical site or a plaque of appreciation. Therefore, speakers of frozen speech merely read from a source. Further, they can employ an oratorical style or delivery to -is intended to be remembered and use in very formal setting such as in palace, church ritual, speech for state ceremony, and some other occasions.
