Kwashiorkor Marasmus Marasmic-kwashiorkor Other examples: Anaemia, Rickets, Scurvy and Osteoporosis DEFINITION OF MALNUTRITION “A cellular imbalance between supply of nutrients and energy and the body's demand for them to ensure growth, maintenance, and specific functions“(WHO; UNICEF; and SCN, 2006). TYPES OF MALNUTRITION Undernutrition (wasting, stunting, underweight), Inadequate vitamins or minerals, Overweight, Obesity and Resulting diet-related non-communicable diseases. WASTING (“THINNESS”) A recent and severe process of weight loss, which is often associated with acute starvation (not enough food) and/or severe disease (diarrhoea). Defined as < -2 SD from median weight for height of reference population. LOW WEIGHT FOR LENGTH STUNTING Impaired growth and development due to poor nutrition, repeated infection, and inadequate psychosocial stimulation. Associated with poor socio-economic conditions, poor maternal health and nutrition, frequent illness, inappropriate feeding in early life. Physical and cognitive development delay are common.
