Are developmental changes the result of innate characteristics (nature) or environmental influences (nurture)? 2. Continuity vs discontinuity a. Is human development a gradual and continuous process in which individuals build on previously acquired knowledge. and skills or is it a discontinuous process, involving a series of discrete stages in which new knowledge and behaviors emerge abruptly? 3. Stability vs change a. As individuals develop, do their characteristics remain stable over time or do they change? b.
