Introduction to the Literatures of the World Archie John Blas Literature Literature Considered the spirit of a country, literature has a profound impact on society in many ways. Men have always tried to record their lofty ideals, regardless of their race, creed, philosophy, or social status. Literature is the question minus the answer. -Roland Barthes Literature, fiction poetry, whatever, makes justice in the world. That’s why it is almost always on the side of the underdog. -Grace Palev Medicine is my lawful wife. Literature is my mistress. -Anton Chekov Literature is just like nature. If you truly love nature, you will find beauty everywhere. Thus, literature is everywhere. -Vincent Van Gogh Literature must be an analysis of experience and a synthesis of the findings into a unity. - Rebecca West Literature is my utopia. Here I am not disenfranchised. No barrier of the sense shuts me out from the sweet, gracious discourses of my book friends. They talk to me without embarrassment or awkwardness. - Hellen Keller Literature…the most seductive, most deceiving, the most dangerous of all professions. - John Morlev Literature returns you to the otherness, whether in yourself or friends, or in those may become friends. Imaginative literature is otherness and as such alleviates loneliness. - Harold Bloom The decline of literature indicates the decline of a nation. - Johan Wolfgang von Goethe Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of tale, of the imagination and of the heart. -Salman Rushdie Literature always anticipates life. It does not copy it, but molds it to its purpose. - Oscar Wilde Every man’s work, whether it be literature or music or pictures or anything else, is always a portrait of himself, and the more he tries to conceal himself, the more clearly will his character appear in spite of him. -Samuel Butler The answers you get from literature depend on the question you pose. -Margaret Attwood But… what is literature? As a pre-service teacher, how would you define literature? What do you think makes literature a significant part of your life? How do you think you can properly interpret or evaluate a literary text? Understanding the Meaning of Literature Poetry, fiction, essays, and other written works with themes of enduring and universal interest are considered literary works; they are to be separated from works of a scientific, technical, or journalistic nature by their creativity and grace of expression. Understanding the Meaning of Literature In a nutshell, literature is the well-chosen and structured exposition of significant human experiences (SHE). Importance of studying literature 1. It expresses our emotions, beliefs and aspirations and sentiments. 2. It reflects the ideologies and philosophies of life. 3. It informs, entertains and teaches a lesson. 4. It allows one to discover himself and grow through the exposure to the beliefs, attitudes, values, customs, and traditions of the people of the world. Importance of studying literature 5. It enables the reader to appreciate literary masterpieces and value the meaning of life. 6. It allows us to understand literary trends and techniques. 7. It gives the distinctive qualities of literary works and ideas peculiar to a certain group of people or nation. 8. It makes us realize the universality of events in human life which we need to understand and accept. 9. It enables students to understand the values of other peoples of the world. Literary Standards Literary Standards A particular literary piece must possess the seven literary standards in order to be called a peerless epitome of artwork capable of enduring the inexorable gusty tides of alternation. To criticize is to consider the seven literary standards. Artistry Intellectual Style Value Literary Standards Universality Suggestiveness Spiritual Permanence Value Literary Standards Artistry It is a quality which appeals to our sense of beauty. Artistry describes literature that is aesthetically appealing and reveals or conveys hidden truth and beauty. This type of literature appeals to broad audiences and possesses a sense of beauty in the writing that could even feel poetic. Literary Standards Intellectual Beauty/Value Literary pieces must stimulate thought. These should enrich our mental life by making us realize fundamental truths about life and human nature. Literature serves a dual purpose; it is not merely for entertainment but also a catalyst for contemplation. Intellectual value takes readers into a bit of a gray area as they may have different opinions about what qualifies as intellectual, but from an academic point of view, intellectual works are relevant to society and thought provoking. Literary Standards Suggestiveness This is the quality relevant to the emotional power of literature to make us feel deeply and stir our feelings and imaginations. It should give and evoke visions above and beyond the plane of ordinary life and experience. It unravels and conjures man’s emotional power to define symbolism, nuances, implied meanings, images and message, giving and evoking visions above and beyond the plane of ordinary life and experiences. Literary Standards Spiritual Value A literary work must elevate the spirit by bringing out moral values which make us better persons. The capacity to inspire is part of the spiritual value of literature. Literature with spiritual value lifts up the inner spirit and soul and has the power to motivate and inspire readers. It typically draws on the suggested lessons and moral codes of society that are depicted in various literary genres. Literary Standards Permanence A great literary work endures and can be read again as each reading gives fresh delights and new insights. It opens new worlds of meaning and experience and its appeal is lasting. It endures across time and draws out the time factor: TIMELINESS, occurring at a particular time, and TIMELESSNESS, remaining invariably throughout time. Permanence is determined by a written work’s ability to stand the test of time, which makes it impossible to determine at the moment of writing. Literary Standards Universality A great literary work is timeless and timely. It is forever relevant, it appeals to one and all, anytime, anywhere because it deals with elemental feelings, fundamental truths, and universal conditions. It appeals to everyone regardless of culture, race, sex, and time which are considered significant. Universality describes a piece of writing that appeals to the hearts and minds of almost any reader. The appeal is considered universal due to its ability to cross gender, racial and cultural barriers, regardless of the time it’s written. Literary Standards Style It is the peculiar way in which a writer sees life, forms his ideas and expresses them. Great works are marked as much by their memorable substance as by their distinctive style. It should suit content. Words can be used in unique, creative and entertaining ways that make the work memorable. Style is another element that is subject to interpretation by readers in terms of its appeal. It presents peculiar ways on how man sees life as evidenced by the formation of his ideas, forms, structures, and expressions which are marked by their memorable substance. Does it tickle your imaginations? What does it suggest? What moral lessons can be drawn out? Would it still be read and make a good reference hundreds of years from now? Does it possess multifaceted natures for all sorts of audience? Does the style fascinate you? Is the style used unique or forgery? What are the qualities that a CLASSIC literary piece must posses?
