STDs are infections spread through intimate sexual contact, making them dangerous and difficult to identify. 1 in 4 teenagers have an STD, and they can be spread through sexual intercourse, oral-genital contact, IV drugs, or congenitally transmitted. 3 TYPES OF STD’s Chlamydia Chlamydia, a prevalent bacterial STI in the US, infects the urethra and cervix in young people aged 15-19. Despite its treatable nature, it often goes undiagnosed until more severe. 5 Chlamydial Infection Symptoms typically occur one to three weeks after exposure. WOMEN: MEN: Abnormal vaginal Penile discharge discharge Mild pain when Mild pain when urinating urinating Progression to pelvic inflammatory disease 6 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Gonorrhoea Chlamydia infection, often mistaken for gonorrhoea, is a bacterial infection transmitted through vaginal and anal intercourse and oral sex, sharing similar symptoms and can occur together. Gonorrhoea, a bacterium from the urethra or cervix, can migrate to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and rectum, leading to pelvic inflammatory disease and long-term problems. 7 Gonorrhoea Symptoms typically occur two to ten days after exposure. WOMEN: MEN: Painful or burning sensation when urinating and/or yellow or bloody Penile discharge vaginal discharge Mild to serve burning Abdominal pain Bleeding between menstrual sensation when urinating periods Vomiting Fever 8 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Syphilis It is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) that can have very serious complications when left untreated, but it is simple to cure with the right treatment. Physicians divide the course of the disease into three stages: primary (stage 1), secondary (stage 2) and tertiary (stage 3). 9 Stage 1: Primary Syphilis Initial symptoms typically occur two to six weeks after exposure and last four to six weeks. Painless chancre on the penis, vulva, vagina, cervix or around the mouth Inflamed lymph nodes 10 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Stage 2: Secondary Syphilis Symptoms typically occur one to six weeks after the chancre heals and last three to six months. Light rash with brown sores roughly the size of a penny, typically on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet; may also cover the rest of the body Sores in or around the genitals or anus Mild fever Fatigue Headaches Sore throat Patchy hair loss Appetite loss Weight loss 11 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Stage 3: Tertiary Stage Symptoms typically occur anywhere from two years to more than forty years after the onset of infection. Syphilis in multiple systems, including the heart and blood vessels, skin, bones and brain. 12 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Genital Warts and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Over 100 human papillomaviruses cause benign genital warts and cervical cancer. They spread through sexual contact and skin- to-skin contact. A vaccine exists to prevent this disease, which can be transmitted through unprotected sex. 13 Genital Warts/Human Papillomavirus (Hpv) Symptoms typically occur three months after exposure. WOMEN: MEN: Clusters of tiny warts Clusters of tiny outside and inside of the warts on the penis, vagina, on the cervix or scrotum or anus around the anus 14 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Genital Herpes (HSV-1, HSV-2) Herpes simplex viruses cause genital herpes, with two types: highly contagious type 2 and type 1, which cause cold sores, gum blisters, and throat infections. Both types can be transmitted through oral sex. 15 Genital Herpes Symptoms typically occur two to ten days after exposure. Initial episode, typically lasting two to three weeks: Itching or burning sensation in the genitals or anus Pain in the genitals, buttocks, legs Vaginal discharge Feeling of pressure in the abdomen Tiny red bumps involving the vagina, cervix, penis and/or anal area; these turn into blisters and then become painful open sores 16 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Genital Herpes Fever Headache Muscle aches Painful or difficult urination Swollen glands in the groin Recurrences, typically lasting about one week: Itching or tingling sensation in the genitals, buttocks or legs Small blisters or open sores at the site of infection 17 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) AIDS is caused by HIV, spread through unprotected sexual intercourse, contaminated needles, intravenous drug use, blood, blood products, and sharp instruments. Symptoms take 10 years to appear, leading to life- threatening infections. 18 HIV/AIDS Symptoms that suggest sexually transmitted infections may include: Headaches Fatigue/weakness Itchy, rashy Difficulty Appetite loss skin/skin lesions Weight loss Chronic coughing swallowing Chronic diarrhea Confusion/delirium Fever Difficulty Nausea/vomiting Night sweats breathing 19 THE SEXUAL SELF 2024 Thank you
