Unit 1: Introduction to Forensics Suggested Lesson Plan CONTENT Provide students with a copy of the Eyewitness Accounts FITB notes. Use the Eyewitness Accounts Lesson (slides 1-4) to introduce the topic. Pause at slide 4 and provide students with the Eyewitness Introduction Testimony WebQuest. This is a great way for students to research information about the validity of eyewitness testimony and will provide them with some background information prior to the lesson. Continue through the remainder of the lesson (slides 5-11) as students take notes. Content I have included several video clips in the lesson that really get the students thinking about the validity of eyewitness accounts. Have students take on the role of a crime scene sketch artist to create a composite drawing based on an eyewitness description. Activity Instructions for this activity are outlined in the Sketchy Characters Assignment pdf file. I always like to spend some time after this lesson having my students research the Ronald Cotton case. There is a 2-part YouTube video Case Study from called 60 Minutes: Eyewitness that I like to show. Link to part 1: https://youtu.be/u-SBTRLoPuo Link to part 2: https://youtu.be/I4V6aoYuDcg If you need an extra assignment, or sub assignment, I have included a worksheet titled Eyewitness Identification Procedures. In this activity, students use a memorandum posted by the US Department of Justice on conducting police line ups. Students must read through the procedures and answer questions about the procedures and Bonus policies. This memorandum can be found here: https://www.justice.gov/file/923201/download#:~:text=Under%20a %20sequential%20procedure%2C%20the,in%20the%20array%20at %20once. What’s Next The Innocence Project
