Lesson 8: Gender and Sexuality as a Ps y c h o s o c i a l Issue Objectives: At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to; 1. Define the term “psychosocial”; 2. Discuss the psychosocial dimension of gender and sexuality; and 3. Reflect upon one’s responsibility in ensuring psychosocial wellness in the aspect of gender and development. What does Psychosocial mean? Psychosocial - The term “psychosocial” is an encompassing term. - It is comprised by two primary aspects; Psychological - pertains to anything associated with mental process and behavior. Social - pertains to anything associated with human relationships, connection, and interaction. PSYCHOLOGY - Is a field of science which concerns itself with how people think and feel and how thoughts and feelings interact and lead to behavior. Three primary psychological domains; - Affective - Behavior - Cognition Affective - pertains to people’s emotions and feelings. Behavior - pertains to the people’s action—both observable (overt) or not readily observable (covert). Cognition - pertains to the people’s thought processes such as memory, perception, and information-processing. Self/Other-awareness Relationship and Intimacy CONTENTS Awareness - At the front of our experience as gendered beings is awareness. Intimacy and Relationship - intimacy refers to a deep and emotional connection between individuals, characterized by closeness, trust, and vulnerability. - relationship refer to the bond or connecttion between two or more people. Well-being as a Psychosocial Goal The ultimate goal of understanding the psychosocial aspects of our experiences is well-being. There are two sides to well-being. 1. Objective well-being - this refers to the measurable, external condition of a person's life. 2. Subjective well-being - this aspect focuses on a person's internal experiences, emotions, and self-perceived happiness or life satisfaction. Dimensions of Well-being Based on what well-being means, we can see that there are various dimensions into it. The following are just the primary dimensions of well-being; physical - physical/biological health; emotional - positive feelings; mood stability; mental-clarity of mind; healthy thought process; material - available and adequate financial and other resources; and social-healthy and positive interaction and relationship with others Thank you!!!
