THE HUMAN PERSON AND THE ENVIRONMENT CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Introduction to the Philosophy of the Human Person Lesson Objectives At the end of the lesson, students are expected to be able to: a. define what constitute the environment, its functions, and human interactions with it Lesson Objectives b. develop a sense of concern and commitment for the care, protection, improvement, and preservation of environment through action plan making and; Lesson Objectives c. device a group mini action plan on how to address environmental issues. Jn. 1:3 Environment a sum total of God’s creation of all the living and non-living elements and their effects which influence human life. FUNCTIONS OF THE ENVIRONMENT Environment (1) It offers resources for production, renewable and non- renewable resources. (Story of Creation Gen. 1:1-31) Environment (2) It has a natural way of getting rid of garbage. (Jn. 6:12 Gather the left overs that nothing may be lost) Environment (3) It provides sustenance to human life, sun, soil, water and air. (Mt. 6:26 Look at the birds in the air... Your Heavenly Father feeds them) Environment (4) Man enjoys natural beauty like rivers, mountains, deserts etc. Psalm 1:3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water... CARING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Care for the Environment Caring or stewardship of Creation is respect to the Creator. It is a requirement of our faith. THE VALUE OF THE ENVIRONMENT The Value of the Environment INSTRUMENTAL VALUE represent the value of ecosystems as merely means to an end and are often measured in monetary terms. The Value of the Environment INTRINSIC VALUE is the value of ecosystems as ends to themselves and are often represented as moral duties. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT an emphasis on social and economic development that protects the sustainability of natural resources and promotes a just distribution of these resources today and for future generations PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT PRINCIPLES OF SUS. DEVT. (1) Environmental integrity - maintaining the state of the environment It is protecting vital global shared resources such as the oceans, land, water and fisheries. PRINCIPLES OF SUS. DEVT. (2) Economic Efficiency - prudence in decision-making regarding the use of resources to ensure that there is minimum to zero waste PRINCIPLES OF SUS. DEVT. (2) Economic Efficiency includes environmental justice, social justice and env’l protection emphasizing the needs of the poor PRINCIPLES OF SUS. DEVT. (2) Economic Efficiency includes workers protection, both workers’ needs and environmental protection are important. PRINCIPLES OF SUS. DEVT. (3) Equity - use our natural resources in such a manner that these are conserved so that the next generation will be able to use them.
