CHRISTIANITY PREPARED BY: MR. NORMAN F. DALIVA CHRISTIANITY In the Christian doctrine, God is the ultimate source of everything. If we depart from Him, we become empty and useless and we are bound to fail. 2 “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.” John 15:5 CHRISTIANITY o From the teachings of the Holy Bible, we learned that Jesus Christ was the Son of God – fully human and fully divine – and through believing in Him and following His teachings, they can inherit eternal life (uri.org). 4 CHRISTIANITY o The knowledge of God begins with FAITH and is made perfect by understanding. All knowledge leads to God, so that faith supplements and enlightens reason that it may proceed to even richer and fuller understanding. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOD OMNISCIENCE: Good is all knowing. OMNIPOTENCE: God is all-powerful. OMNIPRESENCE: God is ever-present. BENEVOLENCE: God is perfectly good, just and all-loving. DIVINE SIMPLICITY: All attributes are integrated and embodied by Him. ETERNAL: God is timeless and has no beginning and end. ST. THOMAS AQUINAS o “Human beings have the unique power to change themselves and things for the better.” o Through our spirituality, we have a conscience. Thus, the choice of “good” and “evil” becomes our responsibility. IMPORTANT TEACHINGS IN CHRISTIANITY o THE TEN COMMANDMENTS o THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS o THE SEVEN CHRISTIAN VALUES 8 9 THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS 1. PRIDE – being snobbish or boastful; asserting one’s greatness. 2. ENVY – the feeling of wanting to have what someone else has. 3. WRATH – extreme anger. 4. GLUTTONY – the act or habit of eating or drinking too much. 5. LUST – a strong feeling of sexual desire. 6. SLOTH – the state of being lazy. 7. GREED – a selfish desire to have more of something, especially money. THE SEVEN CHRISTIAN VIRTUES 1. PRUDENCE – allows us to judge and distinguish correctly what is right and what is wrong. 2. JUSTICE – moves us to give the rightful due to anyone. 3. FORTITUDE – fires us up to overcome fear and to be reasonably steady when facing hardships. 4. TEMPERANCE – moderates our attraction to pleasures, desires and passion. THE SEVEN CHRISTIAN VIRTUES 5. FAITH – opens our senses to believe in God, His revelation and the teachings of the Church. 6. HOPE – motivates us to await and trust the promises of Christ and to rely on the grace of Holy Spirit. 7. LOVE – moves us to selfless, unconditional and voluntary giving of oneself. ST. AUGUSTINE o “Physically we are free yet morally bound to obey the law. The Eternal Law is God. Humanity must do well and avoid evil, hence, the existence of moral obligation in every human being.” o Innocence of heart and purity can only be gained by God’s grace. That gift, in itself, is a major triumph. THANK YOU! ☺
