Lesson 3 Part 3 So another case example and an indicator of excessive downloads and theft of data can be found with three former Department of Homeland Security employees, Charles Edwards, Sonal Patel and Murali Venkata, and they were sentenced for conspiracy to steal proprietary information and sensitive law enforcement databases from the US government for use in a commercial venture. Court documents and evidence presented at their trial showed that Edwards was the former Acting Inspector General of the DHS Office of Inspector General. Patel and Venkata were employed in DHS's OIG organization's Information Technology Department. Edwards, Patel and Venkata, all previously employed at the US Postal Service as well, and they conspired to steal proprietary US software and databases containing sensitive information and PII, or personally identifiable information, of over 200,000 federal employees of DHS and the Postal Service. They planned to use the stolen software and databases to create a commercial software product to be offered for sale to government agencies, and as part of the scheme, the co-conspirators disclosed the stolen software and databases containing PII to software developers located in India. After Venkata learned of the investigation, he deleted incriminating text messages and other communications in an effort to obstruct the investigation. So a case example of an indicator of poor performance and sabotage can be found with a man by the name of Abdul Majid Marouf Ahmed Alani, who was 60 years old from Tracy, California. He was sentenced to 37 months in prison after previously pleading guilty to the federal charge of attempted destruction of an aircraft. According to records on or about 17 July 2019, Alani, who was a mechanic employed by American Airlines at Miami International Airport, tampered with the air data module system of an aircraft that was scheduled to depart from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas. And on or about that date, approximately two hours after its arrival into Miami, the aircraft pulled out for its scheduled departure to Bahamas. There were 150 passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft. While on the departure runway, the flight crew increased power to the aircraft engines in preparation for takeoff, and this resulted in an error reading by the aircraft's computer related to the ADM system, and the takeoff was aborted. Prior to the aircraft's scheduled takeoff from Miami, it was discovered that Alani had inserted a foam substance into the ADM module and used super glue to hold the substance in place. He told investigators that he was upset over a contract dispute between union workers and the airlines, and the dispute had cost him money, and he allegedly explained that he tampered with the aircraft so he could get overtime pay for working on the aircraft. An example of someone who's failed background checks can be found in this individual here. So a naval contractor by the name of Aaron Alexis was fatally shot at a Washington Navy yard after entering building 197 at 8.08am. He was carrying a disassembled shotgun in a shoulder bag. His barrel and stock had been sawn off and he went to the fourth floor where he had worked the week prior. He assembled the shotgun inside a bathroom, then emerged and crossed a hallway into a cubicle near the atrium. At 8.16am he began shooting. Six persons were hit, five of whom died. The sixth survivor had wounds to their head and hands. At 8.17am the first 911 calls were made and by 8.20am Alexis had shot and killed eight persons on the fourth floor. He then made his way to the third floor and killed two more people in the next two minutes. He also fired at several people on at least five separate occasions, wounding a woman in the shoulder as she ran up a stairwell. After firing several shots on the third floor he went to the first floor and while on that floor he moved around randomly before turning around and heading toward the front entrance of the building where he shot and killed a man by the name of Richard Rigel. The security officer stationed there took his 9mm Beretta pistol and two police officers had asked Rigel to remain at his post to try to stop the gunman if he attempted to leave the building. Aaron Alexis fired his shotgun at a second security guard and a navy military police officer on the first floor atrium, missing both. The security guard fired back and Alexis fled down a hallway. Shortly afterwards he fired at two police officers and a naval criminal investigative service agent in another hallway before fleeing. At 8.34am he went towards the west of the building where he encountered two men standing in an alleyway. He tried to fire at them with a shotgun but realised he was out of ammunition. He switched to a Beretta pistol, killing one of the men but the other escaped without injury. Police believe the use of the pistol indicated there was a second gunman so Alexis was fatally shot during the police response making him the 13th fatality. If you look at the psychological conditions of this individual he was believed to have suffered with mental illness. He had a criminal record that included shooting at the ceiling of an apartment and when it came to judgement and character he had a history of poor judgement and past misconduct while serving in the US Navy. Five weeks prior to the incident Alexis told police he believed an individual he'd gotten into a verbal spat with had sent three people to follow him and keep him awake by talking to him and sending vibrations into his body according to police reports. He said he hadn't seen any of these people but insisted they'd followed him between three hotels in the area, the last being a Marriott where police investigating a harassment complaint encountered him. There Alexis told authorities the unseen individuals continued speaking to him through walls and floors and that they used some kind of microwave machine to send vibrations to his body to keep him awake but none of this was reported to his company and they were none the wiser about this incident when he fatally shot the employees.
