Some branches of Philosophy Metaphysics Ethics Epistemology Logic Aesthetics METAPHYSICS is the study of the nature of reality, of what exists in the world, what it is like, and how it is ordered. – In metaphysics philosophers wrestle with such questions as: Is there a God? What is truth? What is a person? What makes a person the same through time? Is the world strictly composed of matter? Do people have minds? If so, how is the mind related to the body? Do people have free wills? ETHICS From the Greek word ethica or ethos meaning manner, customs or habits. A branch of Philosophy dealing with human actions or behavior from moral perspective viewed as right or wrong, good or bad. EPISTEMOLOGY – From the Greek word episteme meaning knowledge and logos meaning theory. – A branch of Philosophy concerned with the theory of knowledge. – It is primarily concerned with what we can know about the world and how we can know it. LOGIC It is a science that deals with the principles of valid reasoning and argument. AESTHETIC The branch of philosophy that deals with essence and perception of beauty and ugliness. the philosophical study of beauty and taste. It is closely related to the philosophy of art, which is concerned with the nature of art and the concepts in terms of which individual works of art are interpreted and evaluated. PHILOSOPHICAL PERSPECTIVES ON ART ART AS AN IMITATION ART AS A REPRESENTATION ART AS A DISINTERESTED JUDGEMENT ART AS A COMMUNICATION OF EMOTION ART AS AN IMITATION – In Plato’s Metaphysics or view of reality, the things in this world are only copies of the original, the eternal and the true entities that can only be found in the World of Forms. ART AS A COMMUNICATION OF EMOTION – Leo Tolstoy – Art serves as a language, a communication device that articulates feelings, emotions that are otherwise unavailable to the audience. – Serves as mechanism for social unity.
