ARCHITECTURE HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS In the American Colonial and Contemporary Period, the Philippine architecture adopted the modern Western architectural style while taking into consideration the physical and socio-cultural situation of the country. Real estate development started to take place, and two-story houses were introduced. Filipino houses were Americanized. HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS Urban housing, multi-story tenements, and government housing projects emerged due to the increasing population and decreasing land availability. Because government housing cannot accommodate all those who are needing low-cost housing, slums and shunties started to proliferate. (Example: Manila) HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS On the other hand, those houses owned by the upper class were characterized as huge with large front garden. Condominiums also emerged. HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS Starting from the Marcos era, there had been constructions of expressways, convention centers, hospitals, hotels, malls, high-rise buildings, amusement centers, etc. All these comes with technological advancements like escalators, elevators, air- conditioning sytem, computers, etc. HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS HISTORICAL FOUNDATIONS In the regional set up, residential houses, churches, public markets, business space tend to imitate the architectural styles in the urban. Also, eco-cultural tourism was introduced. Intramuros ARCHITECTURE FROM LUZON: SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION ARCHITECTURE FROM LUZON: SAN MIGUEL CORPORATION Known advocates of true Filipino architecture, the renowned Mañosa brothers designed this iconic, low-rise building of one of the largest corporations in the country, San Miguel Corporation, with the renowned Banaue Rice Terraces as their main inspiration. It is said to be one of the first early examples of green architecture in the country, and was landscaped in 2006 by no less than the father of Philippine landscape architecture, Ildefonso Santos. ARCHITECTURE FROM VISAYAS: ILOILO CONVENTION CENTER ARCHITECTURE FROM VISAYAS: ILOILO CONVENTION CENTER Considered is a state-of-the-art convention venue in Western Visayas, the Iloilo Convention Center is the symbol of Ilonggo passion and culture. It is built on a 1.7 hectare of lot in Iloilo Business Park designed by Ilonggo architect William Coscolluela. Its exterior fins design is inspired by Paraw Regatta sailboats and abstract designs of the famous Dinagyang Festival are featured on the glass walls of Iloilo Convention Center. ARCHITECTURE FROM MINDANAO: PEARL FARM BEACH RESORT ARCHITECTURE FROM MINDANAO: PEARL FARM BEACH RESORT Located in Samal island of Davao City, the Pearl Farm Beach Resort is built on what was once a farm for culturing pearls. A handiwork of Francisco Mañosa who was a strong advocate of indigenous architecture, the resort’s design was adapted from the traditional stilt houses built along the coastline. ARCHITECTURE FROM MINDANAO: PEARL FARM BEACH RESORT In 2009, Mañosa received the National Artist award for architecture.
